| IE Add-in installation/un-installation process design... Once again I installed IE8, but this time was different, this time I installed it on the company laptop. Ofcourse this poses problems, as company policy prefers the use of IE and therefore I would not outright install Firefox for browsing and leave IE as in-program "browser" for some applications etc. Since the company policy prefers the use of IE, I decided to try it out. Sure the browsing works but have to say that I did not remember (and most likely did not even know) that webpages look really awful these days. For years my standard of browsing has been Firefox + AdBlock and pointing some agressive adsites to 127.0.0.1 in hosts file, and therefore I was pretty sure that in last 5 years something similiar would have been invented also to IE. Quick look through the web revealed many different AdBlock variants for IE, some of which I tested. Now the quality of these AdBlock variants is not the issue in here, (and with some creative modding one might make them useful) but the way IE handles these add-ins. First of all you install these add-ins through separate setup programs, and you also remove them with separate setup programs. Now the questions that comes to my mind are: - why an add-in for IE is installed/uninstalled as operating system program? - why these add-ins cannot be uninstalled from the IE? - When the 3rd party uninstall program says "Some elements could not be removed. These can be deleted manually.", what options do I have to scan through the file system and registry for "the changes, which can be deleted manually". - Why there is not a built-in and mandatory use Add-In management software within IE, using standard practices and validation for install, uninstall, program settings and file locations? - Why there is not a build in AdBlock variant in IE. This could even be called SecureWebElementBlockingTool to avoid problems with the marketing people.. From my point of view, there is still some development to be made with IE and it's add-ins. For now I just stick with Firefox.. |
