| Unable to Log in to Certain Websites Recently I tried repeatedly to log in with my user name and password to two different websites. Each time I tried to, the same screen reappeared. When I tried to log in using a different password or user name, I get the error message, so it appears (and I know for sure) that the info is correct. I attempted to contact the websites but I have had no response. Windows XP Pro, IE 8, SP 3. Is it possible that there is a security safeguard I have to disable? |

| Re: Unable to Log in to Certain Websites The two websites were "Smart Street" and "Charleston Running Club." The screens were "member login." There was no error message - no message at all - when I typed in the correct info. Error messages appeared when I typed in wrong info. What happened was that after I typed in the log in info, the same screen reappeared with "member login." I tried with no add-ons as recommended, with the same results. The most likely cause is old or missing Cookies. Either would be a problem if you were trying to access a site via a "backdoor" saved link, e.g. even after clearing Cookies. --- |

Does the site have a favicon.ico file? You need something simple to prove you have connectivity with an HTTP server there. Or any other image file you happen to have cached. Press Ctrl-F5 so you force a redownload of whatever file you try to get. Using telnet or Fiddler2 would be other tools for diagnosing this. Post the URL you are using if you need more help. I tried to contact it with an > email, but am unable to do so unless I first log in. A real Catch-22. That could be an example of trying to use a backdoor page with an incompatible Cookie from the host server. For example View, Privacy Report (Alt-V,v) shows me that my browser has accepted a Cookie from the site. So, assuming that you already had a Cookie from it you might be sending a corrupt one with that request and that could be causing the site to ignore your request. Related to this, if there was something else going on with that page that required a Cookie to be sent with a request for that page and you didn't have one you should back up and try the root domain for its default page... http://www.charlestonrunningclub.com/ Hmm... View Privacy shows that no Cookie was needed on that page. The Contact Us link on that page is http://www.charlestonrunningclub.com...club_id=139360 So, presumably you could send that in without a Cookie (but expect to see one after it arrived.) BTW that site does have its own favicon, so you do have a very simple connectivity check for it: http://www.charlestonrunningclub.com/favicon.ico (I wasn't clear whether this incident was an HTTP connectivity issue some kind of session identification problem, or an authentication issue.) > > http://www.smartstreet.org/login.asp? This site allows me to give the info, > but it keeps asking for it if I type the right info and gives me an error > message if I type the wrong one. That could be something entirely different. Again, though, I would try starting from the root domain with no Cookies for that site... http://www.smartstreet.org/ which in fact redirects to the page that you want to get to but View Privacy shows that I have accepted a Cookie for it which would be used on the next request. BTW the page says: <quote> NOTICE: We have a new login feature. </quote> So, how new? Again, if you were using it before the site changed its implementation, by trying to use a backdoor page (such as this redirected URL) you might be continually presenting a Cookie with the old format and thus each request would be rejected until you got one with the new format.
