IE7 Installation Problems Following Clean Install

I am beginning this thread upon referral from the Windows Update thread. I
am running XP Pro on a Toshiba Satellite A105-S4002. Last Wednesday, a week
ago, I had to do a clean install to correct "blue screen" problems. A recent
shutdown caused Windows to run Checkdisk before restarting. Upon reading
http://aumha.org/a/stop.htm I am concerned about hard drive damage or boot
sector corruption, despite having run my system's diagnostic utility and my
antivirus, Avira. My firewall is Online Armor. Before I attempt another
installation of IE7, what can I do to assure that there is no damage that
could interfere with the installation?

Re: IE7 Installation Problems Following Clean Install

Your recent thread in Windows Update newsgroup, for reference:
http://groups.google.com/group/micro...a09a89a4ca6542

I believe you're running WinXP SP3, fully-patched, now, is that correct?

You may be worrying just a little too much, especially if you haven't
encountered a BSOD ("blue screen") error in a while (i.e., since 18 Sept-09
or thereabouts).

If such is the case, go ahead and try to install IE7 EXACTLY per my
instructions in this post:
http://groups.google.com/group/micro...f8d38aa19e91b8

Remember: Prior to installing IE7, you want to (a) disable Avira, (b)
disabled Online Armor, and then (c) enable the Windows Firewall.

Thanks. I will attempt the installation later today.

Re: IE7 Installation Problems Following Clean Install

I just attempted to reinstall IE7 as per your instructions. Before
reinstalling I ran subinacl, a link to which Sandi's page provided.
Additionally, before the attempt I uninstalled a driver that I suspected
caused compatibility problems (see my thread under printing and faxing). I
got the same result that I got before with a window appearing for a second
but not opening. Is there a file in Windows that I have to clear before
doing this? I suspect this Ikernel that caused the shut down before.

Internet Explorer 7 exits immediately when you start it in Windows XP or in
Windows Server 2003:

PA Bear

In which order should I try to correct this? Install IE7 and then follow
the KB article, or follow the KB article, then reinstall? Incidentally, as
far as Control Panel allowed, I uninstalled the troublesome Epson drivers.

Re: IE7 Installation Problems Following Clean Install

It really doesn't matter but if IE7 isn't installed (yet/now), reinstall it
(per previously posted instrux). If the behavior comes back, use the
Resolution in KB928427.

Re: IE7 Installation Problems Following Clean Install

I followed the knowledge base article and installed IE7. It worked, except
that it did not create a desktop icon. Now I will see if I can get my
printer and scanner to install.

I just brought that article up and accomplished the task through Set Program
