Uninstall & then reinstall a clean IE7?

O/S Vista Home Basic 32 bit. AVG paid version. IE7.
Due to a cancelled install of IE8 I'm getting IE script error message and
Regsvr error codes and printer not printing. I have spoken to the M/S
support phone # and they haven't been able to help after 2 hours and then
keep missing calling me at the previously arranged follow up appointments.
Is there a way that I can uninstall IE7 and then do an install of a clean
IE7 without having to wipe my entire computer clean and reinstall everything
from ground zero?

Re: Uninstall & then reinstall a clean IE7?

Uninstalling IE8 automatically restores IE7 so there's no need to reinstall
it.

How to uninstall or remove Internet Explorer 8

Re: Uninstall & then reinstall a clean IE7?

I understand. However, the IE8 was in mid-install when I cancelled it. I
think that somehow corrupted my existing IE7. That is why I would like to
install a clean IE7 if such is possible.

I don't know why you cancelled the install of IE8 mid stream, you should
never do that to any install. Try installing IE8 again and this time let it
finish. After it has finished installing you can now uninstall it, this will
automatically install IE7.

Let us know what happens.

Re: Uninstall & then reinstall a clean IE7?

1. Open an IE window & click on Help | About: What version is displayed
here?

2. In Windows Explorer, navigate to and right-click on

C:\Programs Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE <=this file

Select Properties | Version (tab): Copy the displayed version to your
clipboard then Paste the contents of your clipboard into a reply to this
post.

3. Start | Control Panel | Click 'Uninstall a Program' under the Programs
category | In the Tasks pane, click 'View installed updates' | Tell me if
"Windows Internet Explorer 8" is listed here? DO NOT ATTEMPT TO UNINSTALL
IT YET, JUST TELL ME IF IT'S THERE!

>>> ...I'm getting IE script error message and
>>> Regsvr error codes and printer not printing.

4. Post the complete error message.

Re: Uninstall & then reinstall a clean IE7?

1. In the IE window the version is: 7.0.6002.18005 Cipher Strength: 256 bit
Product ID: 89572-OEM-7332166-00096 Update Versions: 0

2. Vista Home Basic either doesn't have clipboard feature or I'm sadly
unable
to operate it. Also unable to do a screen print. However, I did nav to
C:\Programs Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE and carefully copied (by
hand) the information from the Details Tab. I triple checked to make sure I
give it to you right. The File Version is 7.0.6002.18005 The Product
Version is 7.0.6002.18005.

3. In the Installed Updates there is NOT Internet Explorer 8 listed. Repeat
....not listed. I also checked in Windows Update>View Update History and it
says Internet Explorer 8 for Windows Vista status: cancelled on 8/26/09.

Re: Uninstall & then reinstall a clean IE7?

I'm shamefaced. Usually don't miss things like that. My apologies.
4. IE Script Error
An error has occured in the script on this page
Line 1829
Char: 1
Error: Unspecified Error
Code: 0
URL: res://ieframe.dll/preview.dlg

I tried Start/Run & type regsvr32 ole32.dll press enter & reboot
No good. I still get the above message when I try to print anything plus it
freezes whatever window I'm in when trying to print. I have to use task mgr.
to get out of freeze.
Also, was getting a further message:
RegSvr32
The module "ole32.dll" was loaded but the call to DllRegisterServer failed
with error code 0x80070005.
Have not gotten that message in 2 days.
I did try disabling UAC & doing the Start/Run, type regsvr32 ole32.dll then
reboot & try
It said it suceeded. But then I tried to print & got the same message again
re: IE Script Error and once again more freezing the window. The only thing
it does not freeze is when I try to print a page from the internet.
BTW, I did turn UAC back on after the test. And yes, I rebooted after
turning UAC back on.

Re: Uninstall & then reinstall a clean IE7?

Are any of these AVG Add-ons installed? => Linkscanner, Search-Shield,
Active Surf-Shield, Security toolbar

[As they're all available in AVG Free, I presume they're available in the
paid versions. YMMV.]

Was AVG (and the AVG firewall, if present) running in the background when
you attempted to install IE8?

See if a Reset addresses the problem: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737

Re: Uninstall & then reinstall a clean IE7?

Yes, I have the AVG Link Scanner & Web Shield. I uninstalled the AVG Toolbar
a long time ago (don't like too many add ons, plus it made "bugs", plus
didn't need it). There is no AVG Firewall for me...at least there's nothing
listed as a "firewall". My paid AVG is anti virus not the entire security
suite. However, I DO have my windows firewall so no need for another one.
Plus, I'm wireless which people keep telling me IS a firewall.
Well now...as to the AVG running in the background...I assume it's always
running in the background isn't it? It has to in order to do it's work
doesn't it? But if you're asking if it was being updated at that moment...
the answer is no. I do that 1st thing each morning when I turn the computer
on before I do ANYTHING else on the computer.

I will try the reset. Should I turn off AVG before doing the reset?

Re: Uninstall & then reinstall a clean IE7?

PA Bear, I am overjoyed to say that I'm up & running, printing & scanning
and have no error messages of any kind! WHEW! This has been one wild ride to
be sure. I want to thank you for your patient guidance through this
convoluted process. Never doubt that it is most certainly appreciated.
There is one little thing that is odd. Prior to this happening, I was able
to use the printer with the UAC turned on. Now I find that the only way the
printer will print is with the UAC turned OFF. Weird..... Perhaps I should
address that issue in the group dealing with printers. Furthermore; I am not
sure it really matters if I have UAC on or off as there is only 1 computer &
1 printer in the home & I am the only one who uses them so perhaps leaving
the UAC turned off is of no consequence.
Okay, what about the AVG Link Scanner and Web Shield?

Re: Uninstall & then reinstall a clean IE7?

Great news & you're very welcome.

IN RE AVG, I would strongly recommend that you:

1. Make certain you have your Product ID or AVG license handy;

2. Uninstall AVG (Pro? Internet Security?) & reboot;

NB: You're "working without a net" now: Don't to ANYTHING else online (e.g.,
browsing; reading email; chatting) until you've completed #3 through #5
below!!

NB: If you're running AVG Internet Security, make certain the the Windows
Firewall is enabled at this point.

3. Reinstall the AVG application...this time select the CUSTOM install
option and do NOT to install Linkscanner, Search-Shield, Active Surf-Shield,
Security toolbar, and/or any of the email scanning components. Follow all
prompts.

[Why you don't need your anti-virus to scan your email
http://thundercloud.net/infoave/tuto...ing/index.htm]

4. If you're running AVG Internet Security, the AVG firewall should be
enabled now and the Windows Firewall should be disabled.

5. Now update AVG manually & repeatedly until you get a "No more updates"
prompt.

IN RE printing & UAC, I'd recommend that you begin a new thread about the
behavior in Vista Print_Fax_Scan newsgroup:
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsof...print_fax_scan

Tell 'em I sent you! <wink>

Happy Trails!
