IE8 and XP embedded

I'm using a thin client computer with XPe SP2. I'd like to upgrade to IE8.
I've tried running the upgraded but keep getting an error that it has
failed. Is IE* compatible with XPe?? If so, is there a special version?
Thank you!

Re: IE8 and XP embedded

Is IE8 offered http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com after doing a CUSTOM scan?

Tip: Do NOT install IE8 via Windows Update!

Re: IE8 and XP embedded

Thank you for the response.

I'm not sure if I'm missing something...I went to this link but don't see
anything about a custom scan. The site wanted to download the latest
Windows Update Software. should I be doing this?

Thanks again!

Re: IE8 and XP embedded

I tried clicking Custom and it said it needed to update some components. I
clicked okay and it failed to update the Validation tool and Update for XP.
I couldn't go any further.

Typically, I like to do updates manually and not use Automatic Updates.
This is a brand new Dell thin client. I haven't run any updates as of yet.
This was the first thing I was trying to update.

Re: IE8 and XP embedded

Is Automatic Updates enabled, Scott? Are you aware that you can configure
Automatic Updates such that updates will not download or install without
your approval?

How to configure and use Automatic Updates in WinXP:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306525

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)?

Has a(another) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this
machine (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought
it)?

Is the computer still under Warranty or Service Contract?

Re: IE8 and XP embedded

No, AU is not enabled. I typically like to run updates myself. Have had
some issues with automatic updates in the past. I typically wait to do them
after I run a full backup, just to be safe.

The computer has Symantec Endpoint installed (by Dell). I turned it off
before trying to update. No other software has been installed yet. No
antispy, firewalls, etc.

Yes, it's still under warranty. It's only 3 weeks old.

Enable Automatic Updates, selecting the Notify Only setting, then test
Windows Update website again.

Re: IE8 and XP embedded

First, thanks for sticking with me to try to figure this out!

I turned on AU as you suggested. I clicked on Custom. It said I needed to
get the latest Windows Update. I clicked ok...it failed on the same 2
files....Genuine Advantage Validation Tool (kb892130) and Windows XP update
(KB898461).

Re: IE8 and XP embedded

[A real headscratcher is the fact that you've got WinXP SP3 (OEM, I assume)
installed and the Applies To section of KB898461 only lists WinXP SP1.]

1. Go to http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/ and see if you can Validate via
the Validate Windows button on the left.

2. Now give this FixIt a whirl: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058

3. Return to Windows Update (WU) website & test (CUSTOM) option. Again, you
want to install any critical security updates offered.

Tip: Do NOT install IE8 via WU or Automatic Updates (AU)! If IE8's offered
at WU, "hide" it for now, please.

Tip: If the computer came with IE7 preinstalled and a Root Certificates
update is offered in the Optional category, install it to take full
advantage of IE7's enhanced security.

Tip: It may behoove you to disable Symantec Endpoint Protection prior to
updating via WU website. If the Symantec app includes a firewall, disable
it, too, then enable the Windows Firewall.

Sorry...I forgot to post this. I spoke to Microsoft and they said that IE8
is not compatible with XP Embedded as of yet. Should be in the future.

Thanks again for your help!!
