| Cannot update security update KB938127 for IE7. I recently bought another computer which doesn't get used much only for games etc. It updated windows updates ok until until some weeks back. Then it kept asking me to update security update KB938127 for IE7. However every time I do it fails! On investigating further and trying to update by another method, it says 'this file is not compatable with your system'. Why is this? I've done virus checks and everything seems clean. In fact my system works fine other than this little hiccup. I use Windows XP Pro & service pack 3. Any help please? -- Ray |

| Re: Cannot update security update KB938127 for IE7. Is this a brand-new computer or a used/new-to-you computer? Did you install WinXP SP3 manually (versus via Windows Update)? Did you install SP3 before you installed IE7? Open Windows Explorer to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 <=this folder and run a Search (CTRL+F) for VGX.DLL. Right-click on the found file (if found) & select Properties | Version, copy the version to your clipboard and paste it into a reply to this thread. -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-IE, Mail, Security, Windows Client - since 2002 Rays wrote: > I recently bought another computer which doesn't get used much only for > games etc. It updated windows updates ok until until some weeks back. | Re: Cannot update security update KB938127 for IE7. Hi PA Bear. Yes this is a new computer made to spec. WinXP SP3 was already installed along with IE7. whether it was installed before IE7, I'm not sure. I ran a search in Windows\System32 but no luck. I then ran a search in Windows itself for VGX.DLL & found two files both the same in the software Distribution folder & copied this: 7.0.6000.20628. What next? By the way thanks for your help. I read earlier messages on this particular update and it was mentioned about running spuninst.exe to uninstall IE7. Is this not a registry cleaner? -- Ray "PA Bear [MS MVP]" wrote: > Is this a brand-new computer or a used/new-to-you computer? > > Did you install WinXP SP3 manually (versus via Windows Update)? | Re: Cannot update security update KB938127 for IE7. VGX.DLL is an IE- & Windows-specific file. Long story short: If you have WinXP SP3 installed, your computer doesn't need KB938127. (Why Windows Update is offering it is anybody's guess but I expect it's related to the way or the order in which the shop installed WinXP SP3 and IE7.) Proceed as follows: 1. Stop the Automatic Updates service: Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK] Double-click Automatic Updates > Click on Stop (Stopping the service will take a moment) 2. Delete the contents of the Download folder: Start > Run > (type in) %windir%\SoftwareDistribution > [OK] Open the Download folder and delete its contents Close the window. 3. Go to Windows Update website | Select CUSTOM and allow the scan to complete | Uncheck/deselect KB928127 and hide it ("Don't show me this update again"). 4. Start the Automatic Updates service: Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK] Double-click Automatic Updates > Click on Start (Starting the service will take a moment) Should you want a second opinion from MS: Start a free Windows Update support incident request: https://support.microsoft.com/oas/de...spx?gprid=6527 For home users, no-charge support is available by calling 1-866-PCSAFETY in the United States and in Canada or by contacting your local Microsoft subsidiary. There is no-charge for support calls that are associated with security updates. When you call, clearly state that your problem is related to a Security Update and cite the update's KB number (e.g., KB939127). LOOK!! => If your problem relates to an IE Security Update, call the above number and ask to be transferred to the "Consumer IE queue" (which is 47830). -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-Windows (IE, OE, Security, Shell/User) AumHa VSOP & Admin; DTS-L.net Rays wrote: > I ran another search & also found VGX.DLL in Program files\Common Files. > File Version:7.0.5730.13 > Is this a type of Spyware? > >> Hi PA Bear.
