I get the following error message when trying to install Windows Internet
Explorer 8 in Windows XP. I'm currently running IE7. I checked the
crytographic service and it is enabled and set to automatic.

"Setup could not verify the integrity of the files needed for installation.
Make sure the crytographic service is running on this computer."


What should I do?

Is Automatic Updates enabled & working? Can you install any available
critical security updates offered at http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com (but
not IE8)?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)? Were any of these applications running
in the background when you attemped to install IE8?

Has a Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this machine
(e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)?

How did you find cryptographic services. I looked in my services and found
nothing. I have win2k pro. All I want to do is load IE7. I get an aborted
install and get the same error you get. Make sure cryptographic services is
running it is neede to verify the integrity of the files neede for
installation.
