Yes. Just rename them once they are downloaded.
Alternatively, you could try using the option in the Security Settings dialog:
Disable Open files based on content not file extension
(doubleclick on Internet icon, press Alt-C,M,O,D,Space to set that)

I am having the same problem. I can open and use .docx documents at work, but
cannot at home on my laptop. The laptop is running XP, IE8 and MS Outlook Web
Access 2003. Earlier I Googled ".docx zip file" and read someone's comment
that this problem is related to IE8.

Anybody got any suggestions???

Install Office 2007 on your home machine.
