Re: Lost log in cookies

No, it is not normal. Are absolutely, 100% positively sure that Tea Timer's
been disabled, Mike?

One or more options/settings in an ever-growing number of third-party
applications may be disallowing all these changes from "sticking" after
closing IE or rebooting. These include anti-spyware applications (e.g.,
Ad-aware's Ad-Watch, Spybot **Tea Timer**, SpywareBlaster, SpySweeper,
Spyware Doctor, CounterSpy, WinPatrol, etc), anti-virus applications &
security suites (Norton, McAfee, ESET/NOD32, Kasperky, Trend Micro, etc.),
and third-party firewalls (e.g., **Zone Alarm**, etc.).

Note that temporarily disabling the application(s) or rebooting into Safe
Mode may not disable the application's system protections.

I still suspect ZoneAlarm (Free?) is the responsible party here. (Note that
simply disabling ZA temporarily will not disable it's "system protections.")
I'll give you two recommendations/options:

#1 => Post about these unwanted behaviors in the appropriate ZA forum:
http://forums.zonelabs.com/zonelabs

#2 => Disable all ZA "system protections" and then uninstall ZA. Be sure to
enable the Windows Firewall after doing so!

Best of luck.

Re: Lost log in cookies

Hi

I really don't want to sound like I am disrespecting your advice but I feel
one point I keep making is being over looked.

For well over two years my system has been fine with all the applications
running that I have now.

Spybot, Zone Alarm, SPG and SPB all running without issue.

The problem only came up around the time of the June MS updates.

Also, I have disabled everything by booting with msconfig to switch off all
non MS programmes.
Sure ZA and Avira tried to carry on but I did stop them.

Thanks

Mike

Re: Lost log in cookies

> The problem only came up around the time of the June MS updates.

ZA running in the background when the June updates were installed may have
caused the ensuing behavior, Mike.

The fact that the changes you make to the Allowed/Disallowed Cookies list
also suggests that ZA, not any of the updates, is the responsible party here
(unless Tea Timer's not be disabled).

If you feel that one or more of the updates you installed caused the
problem, you can...

Start a free Windows Update support incident reques:
https://support.microsoft.com/oas/de...spx?gprid=6527

For home users, no-charge support is available by calling 1-866-PCSAFETY in
the United States and in Canada or by contacting your local Microsoft
subsidiary. There is no-charge for support calls that are associated with
security updates. When you call, clearly state that your problem is related
to a Security Update and cite the update's KB number (e.g., KB969897).

LOOK! => If your problem relates to a Cumulative Security Update for IE
(e.g., KB969897), call the above number and ask to be transferred to the
Consumer IE7 queue (which is 47830).

For more information about how to contact your local Microsoft subsidiary
for security update support issues, visit the International Support Web
site: http://support.microsoft.com/common/international.aspx

Good luck.

Re: Lost log in cookies

installed have anything to do with your problem, Mike.

Time to post in ZA Forums (or uninstall ZA Free, enable the Windows Firewall
& see if the behavior persists).

Re: Lost log in cookies

HI again

Are you the only other person on this forum LOL

Yeah maybe, why they could not just come out and say that I don't know.

I really don't think ZA is to blame, I am running ZA 6.1.744.001 which is
old but stable, then new versions I found unreliable.

This version of ZA has no cookie control.

One thing I have noticed that puzzles me.

The location for cookies in IE is E:\Documents and Settings\Mike\Local
Settings\Temporary Internet Files

yet the system location for cookies is shown as user C:\Documents and
Settings\Mike\Cookies

Two locations for the same thing?

I did a IE reset today and I can now add sites to the allowed list and they
do stay there, however when I close and re start IE the log in info is still
lost.

Thanks

Re: Lost log in cookies

C:\Documents and Settings\Mike\Cookies is where your cookies are stored on
Windows XP.

E:\Documents and Settings\Mike\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files is
"virtual viewer" of Windows and displays a mix of cookies and cache files.

Your cache files are really in alphanumerically named sub-folders of
E:\Documents and Settings\Mike\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files\Content.IE5.

Try this. If Windows is installed on your E drive (according to Logfile of
HijackThis, it is), then run regedit and go to

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\Shell
Folders

What is the path for Cookies, in the right-hand pane? (Is it C:\Documents
and Settings\Mike\Cookies or E:\Documents and Settings\Mike\Cookies, or
something else?)

Go to

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\User
Shell Folders

Is the Data for Cookies "%USERPROFILE%\Cookies" (no quotes)?

and

%USERPROFILE%\Cookies

Thanks

Re: Lost log in cookies

Do you have two, separate instances of Windows installed, one on your C:
drive and one on your E: drive?

If not, did you intentionally change the location of your Temporary Internet
Files folder from the default location (i.e., from C:\Documents and
Settings\Mike\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files to E:\Documents and
Settings\Mike\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files)?

Re: Lost log in cookies

Your registry entries look to be at their defaults for XP installed on drive
E, regarding the location of the Cookies folder.

In Control Panel>Date and Time, is the clock, time zone, etc., set
correctly? Is "Automatically adjust clock for Daylight saving changes"
checked? On the Internet Time tab, click Update Now. Are any errors
reported?

Re: Lost log in cookies

All checks out fine thanks.

By the way for those helping me with this.
Tonight I have removed Zone Alarm, SpyBot and Avira in favour of Kaspersky
Internet Security 8. I get it free from my bank so to good to miss.
Anyway, the relevance is the cookie problem continues :-(

RE: Lost log in cookies

I'm having the same issue. For the past week or so, none of my login info or
preferences are holding in IE7. Nothing new has been installed or changed,
except for the regular updates through Windows Update

I don't think this is a security software issue and believe it to be a
Windows Update/IE7 update caused specific issue involving access to cookies.
I have not messed with any IE settings in about a year, since everything has
been running perfect before this issue occurred.

Specific Issue: When I go to a website, like Bing, Google, various forums,
Windows Live, TVGuide.com, etc., where login info and website preferences can
be set and stored, I'm having to re-input or re-set the info when I visit
them. Prior to this issue, everything worked perfectly, like we're used to.

Example 1: When I go to Bing, I have to reset my preferences such as "Open
results in new window", turn off filtering, etc. The site then works
properly. But after a certain amount of time, or a reboot/sleep mode, all
settings are lost again.

Example 2: Sites that are logged into, like Wiindows Live and various
non-Microsoft forums, I have "Remember Me" set to remember Username. After a
period of time or a reboot/sleep mode, I have to reinput my username and
reset all preferences.

Example 3: On TVGuide.com, I can set my region, cable system, and other
preferences so that the proper listings show. But after a period of time or a
reboot/sleep mode, all settings are lost and I have to reset them.

Does anyone have any idea what's causing this and how to solve it?
Microsoft's KB has nothing on this and even Bing/Google don't show anything.

System:
Vista Ultimate x64, SP1
IE7
All Windows Updates current
Trend Micro Internet Security, latest updates

RE: Lost log in cookies

Yes and I am still having the issue.
I have changed both my AV and firewall and it made no differance at all.

Its a real pain.

Re: Lost log in cookies

You do not have the same issue as you're running Vista SP1 and the OP's
running WinXP SP3.

If a Windows or IE update were causing the behavior, there'd be thousands of
posts here about it: There aren't.

To avoid confusion, please begin a new thread about your specific problems.
State your IE version and full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3; Vista SP2)
in your first post.
