I'm use to seeing the yellow lock at the bottom right of the window when on
a secure shopping cart. In IE 8 I'm not seeing this. How can I be sure I am
on a secure page in IE 8

Start looking at the top instead of the bottom.

You should see a "LOCK" icon to the right side of the Address bar when you
are on a secure site.
