| Problems after I Uninstalled IE 8 I could not solve my issues of IE 8 crashing. I tested all the Add-ons but to no avail. Now, after uninstalling IE 8 manually and rebooting twice, I am getting notification from Windows Update that I need to install updates for IE 8. I don't have IE 8 installed and I don't want to have it think that I do. How can I fix this? |

| Re: Problems after I Uninstalled IE 8 > ...I don't have the time to sit on the phone > with Microsoft and try to explain something I don't really understand. Well, you've already spent 24 hours on this. If you don't understand what happened, how can anyone here understand? Is "Windows Internet Explorer 8" listed in Add/Remove Programs? You post here using a Vista SP2 machine. Assuming it's the machine in question, which was installed first, Vista SP2 or IE8? What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall (if any)? Were any of these applications running in the background when you installed IE8 and/or SP2? Has a Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this machine (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)? Do you have an available Restore Point which predates the (original/first) install of IE8? | Re: Problems after I Uninstalled IE 8 Hi, Sorry, your User Agent info is correct for IE7. I don't know why Windows Update would be detecting IE8. If you install IE8 again, make sure that third-party antivirus and antispyware programs are disabled during the installation. Also, some third-party firewalls have caused problems. | Re: Problems after I Uninstalled IE 8 I haven't sat continuously for 24 hours but yes this is a problem for which I have asked assistance over a period of several weeks. As I responded to your questions previously: IE 8 is not listed in the Add/Remove Programs. I am using the machine in question. This last time, since I formatted the machine, the IE8 was added and then when the SP2 was offered, that was downloaded. The AV is Shaw Secure (by F Secure) and only Malwarebytes for Spyware as I was advised by the recent tech support person to remove other Spyware programs as they were causing issues. These were running in the background at the time of the download after the format process. I have since done as you suggested in a previous post, removed the IE8 manually and rebooted twice. I then turned off all programs and protection and again installed IE8 and again rebooted twice. The problems continued and I finally gave up and removed the program and reverted back to IE7. It was at this point that Windows attempted to add updates and the IE8 update was considered an important update. After several attempts to reboot and searching through the history of updates and checking the KB#'s with those still loaded, I decided to "hide" the update rather than again try to format. After paying someone to install my wireless printer, I wasn't excited about having to figure that one out myself. I formatted my computer because I had downloaded IE8 some months ago and it crashed consistently. I reverted to IE7 and the problem continued so I figure by starting fresh I could get it to work nicely and made sure I had it all up and running prior to the tech guy arriving. Norton and McAfee have not recently been installed. My machine is several years old and been formatted several times. I could not be positive that Norton free trial was not on it but I believe it was not on this machine. I would have gone to a restore point prior to the install of IE8 but it only shows 3 current restores and even when I click, "show other restore points" it shows nothing. I know nothing more than this, but as I said in my last post I appreciate your assistance and hope you understand I am making a sincere attempt to understand what is happening here. | Re: Problems after I Uninstalled IE 8 Thanks for the assistance. As I indicated to Pa Bear, I have "hidden" the important update and at some point down the road I may get brave again, and go for a format of the drive. I am not sure if I want to try IE8 again until I get a handle on why there was a problem when the system seemed clean. I understand that by leaving the protection running while it was downloading that it might have created a conflict but once I had it removed and reinstalled with all protection off I would have expected that it would be running properly. I have difficulty downloading with all protection off. It was hard enough to do it while Vista was loading. That was many hours unprotected. again, thanks "Don Varnau" <don_04[at]varnau[dot]org> wrote in message news:%23piov8W5JHA.4184@TK2MSFTNGP02.phx.gbl... > Hi, > Sorry, your User Agent info is correct for IE7.
