Personalized favorites (IE7)

I have uninstalled IE8 (dod not work well for me) and gone back to IE7. But
now the menu option "Enable personalized favorites" in IE7 does not seem to
work any more. Why is that?

Is there anything I can do to get this feature back?

Re: Personalized favorites (IE7)

I have now waited 4 weeks, and the personalization has not yet taken effect.
There must be another problem - maybe something from IE8 still sits in the
registry?

Re: Personalized favorites (IE7)

Which was installed first, WinXP SP3 or IE7?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)? Were any of these applications running
in the background when you installed and/or uninstall IE8?

Has a Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this machine
(e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)?

Re: Personalized favorites (IE7)

Hello,

Thank you for responding! Here are my answers to your questions:

- I am not sure whether IE7 originally was installed before or after SP3 - I
believe after.

- I have Norton AntiVirus 2006 with a current subscription. I have also
Spyware Doctor 6.0 with Antivirus. I have no other firewall (Windows
Firewall is deactivated.) I do not remeber if they were running when I
installed IE8.

- Norton was not preinstalled.

(I should mention that I had to reinstall Windows some time ago - I did a
full reinstallation, with reformatting of the hard disk.)

Regards,
Hans

Open Add/Remove Programs | Make certain the SHOW UPDATES box at the top is
checked | Scroll down to & select (click on) "Windows Internet Explorer 7"
=> Is a REMOVE or UNINSTALL button available? [yes/no]

Re: Personalized favorites (IE7)

Hello,

There is a Remove button available for Windows Internet Explorer 7.
I also have four security updates för IE7 (KB956390, KB961260, KB938127-v2
and KB963027), all with the Remove button.

Re: Personalized favorites (IE7)

Your reply tells me that WinXP SP3 was installed before IE7 was installed,
Hans.

The following instructions should resolve the problem. You will want to
copy/paste the instructions into Notepad or Wordpad for offline reference.

Preparatory Step: Open your browser to the following web-page and SAVE the
download to your desktop (do not RUN it) =>
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...0-081805b2f90b

===================================

1. Disable & Stop the Automatic Updates service:

• Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK]
• Double-click on Automatic Updates
• Under Startup Type, select DISABLED
• Click on the STOP button
(Stopping the service will take a moment)
• Exit

2. Disable Norton AntiVirus, any Norton Add-ons, and the Norton firewall AND
THEN enable the Windows Firewall!

NB: You're "working without a net" now: Don't to ANYTHING else online (e.g.,
browsing; reading/checking email; chatting) except the steps below until you
have completed Step #11!

3. Close any open applications (i.e., anything with an icon on the task
bar).

4. Open Add/Remove Programs, select (click on) "Windows Internet Explorer 7"
and press the REMOVE button to uninstall IE7.

NB: It is perfectly safe to ignore any "Such-and-such may not work..."
warnings. Do not touch the keyboard until the uninstall process completes,
then reboot two (2) times.

5. IMPORTANT! => Repeat Steps #2 and #3 above.

6. Double-click on the file you saved in the Preparatory Step above to
install IE7. Do not touch the keyboard until the installation process
completes, then reboot two (2) times.

7. IMPORTANT! => Repeat Steps #2 and #3 above.

8. Open IE to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com | Select CUSTOM and scan
for available updates:

• If "Windows Internet Explorer8" is listed, de-select (uncheck) it then
hide it ("Do not show me this update again");

• Install any critical security updates offered (e.g., KB969897);

• If a Root Certificates update is listed in the Optional Software Updates
category (left-hand wide), install it to take advantage of IE7's enhanced
security;

• Do NOT install any other Optional Software Updates or any Optional
Hardware Updates!!

9. If the installation process does not prompt you to reboot, reboot anyway.

10. Make certain that Norton AntiVirus and the Norton firewall are enabled
now and that the Windows Firewall is disabled.

11. Enable and Re-start the Automatic Updates service:

• Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK]
• Double-click on Automatic Updates
• Under Startup Type, select ENABLED
• Click on the START button
(Starting the service will take a moment)
• Exit

[END]

===================================

Good luck!

Re: Personalized favorites (IE7)

Thank you - it worked!

But I had a problem installing IE7, which I had to fix as described in
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917925, so the procedure was a bit
time-cosuming.

Regards,

Hans

Re: Personalized favorites (IE7)

You're very welcome, Hans.

KB917925 lists several troubleshooting Methods. May I ask you which one(s)
resolved the problem, Hans (e.g., Reset security settings back to the
defaults)?

I suspect one or more of your Norton Add-ons (including the Norton Toolbar)
may have been the culprit(s).
