| IE8 problem...solved I had a problem with IE8, WinXP, SP3. I kept getting a Google pop up ad, and also getting 2 copies of IE opening and one saying it had a problem and would shut down, then the other copy took over the same page. I tried everything including reinstalling IE8 which deleted the previous IE8 and installed the new. Same problem. Yesterday I downloaded Mozilla Firefox. On its first run it asked me if I wanted to import all my IE settings. I chose yes and it works great. Loads in half the time of IE8, and almost looks and acts the same as IE8 except it actually works correctly. |

| Re: IE8 problem...solved Well, Leonard, I've used IE since Windows came out. Used basic com protocol before the internet came into being. I ran McAfee complete scan and found no virus. After reinstalling IE8 and having the same problem it just wasn't worth the trouble to continue with IE8. You're right, though, if, in another 20 years I have trouble with Firefox, maybe I will try Opera or Safari. The first version for IE did not come out until Windows 95 was released, that was long past "since Windows came out" - the first version of Windows was from 1983, and the first version of Internet Explorer was in 1995. A few months later the first version for Windows for Workgroups was released. One of my early job roles was rolling out IEv2 on WfW where I work :) > Used basic com protocol before the internet came into being. What do you mean by this? Are you talking about old serial modems via BBS? The Internet is very, very old - the name roughly dates back to 1980 when ARPANET was linked to NSFNet. The WWW, which many people refer to as "the Internet" and uses a "web browser" dates back only to 1989, and the first graphical web browser was released in 1993. > I ran McAfee complete scan and found no virus. McAfee isn't 100% perfect. And no virus (even if you definitely have none) doesn't mean no malware - McAfee (and other) virus scanners only look for virus patterns, and a few malicious malware patterns, but the vast majority of malware isn't detected by AV scanners. There is no 100% detection for all malicious software, so you can never be sure you are completely clean unless you are able to dissect the system completely. Even OS installation disks occassionally include applications considered by some as malware so a clean install does not guarantee a clean system. > After reinstalling IE8 and having the same problem it just wasn't worth > the trouble to continue with IE8. Did you run IE in no add-ons mode, or perform a reset? Those 2 steps are the first to determining if the browser is the problem. It would be highly probable that performing either one or both of these would have solved the issue, which would point to a 3rd party add-on toolbar/plugin being the source of the problem. > You're right, though, if, in another 20 years I have trouble with > Firefox, maybe I will try Opera or Safari. You haven't even used IE for 20 years yet (most you could have managed is just under 14 years in - or just over 14 years if, like me, you were in the Windows 95 beta programme). I guess you'll switch again as soon as you start having problems because of a problematic 3rd party add-on you've installed rather than realising that the browser itself isn't the problem. I've just seen one of your other replies and realise that you're somewhat older than I am, so just ignore my reply here, I'll assume you were talking about some much older military network systems. Not really relevant to the discussion of IE - the underlying concepts of HTTP are only now 20 years old. -- Dan |

And some were taking as a flaky character ;-) I am with you on this, that this is the first time ever that the installation of a software from Microsoft bamboozles some previously well behaving function. GodBless Well, thanks, James. I had previously reported my IE8 problems on this group and tried several suggestions to correct it, including completely removing and reinstalling IE8. Didn't work. It was no longer worth the effort to continue since I'll be buying a new computer in November after Windows 7 comes out. Firefox solved all my problems instantly and works better than IE8 ever did. I thought other users would like to know about this easy alternative when they're having problems. |
