| Problems viewing some websites I recently built up a brand new laptop with Windows XP for one of our remote sales reps and it had IE7 on it. While I had it in our office, I had no problems accessing any websites, however, when the sales rep got the laptop set up in his home, he could not get to some websites. Just an example of 2 of the sites are American Airlines and Boston Globe. He is connecting wirelessly in his home, but so is his wife from her laptop, and she is able to get to those sites just fine. What is even more weird is that he can access those sites from his same laptop when he is using wireless at a hotel. We have since upgraded him to IE8, but he still has issues getting to those same sites. I originally thought it might be his wireless router, but since his wife can access the sites, I have to rule that out. It cant be the laptop since it is brand new, and another fact is that he had the same exact problem with his previous laptop. Can anyone shed a little light? |

| RE: Problems viewing some websites Hi, I have the same problem, when I access http://www.moviecom.com.br/indexp.php?id=JUN. Sometimes it's "OK", sometimes the page is blank. Can anyone help me? When at his home, is the sales rep using a VPN to get to your corporate network before he gets to the Internet (versus his wife who uses their home ISP to get to the Internet)? Since the sites are accessible when using a wifi hotspot other than at home (and presumably he is using his own router and not "borrowing" from a neighbor), the problem certainly looks to be upstream of the host. Perhaps they have filtering enabled in the router and his MAC isn't listed as an exclusion. Has he tried resetting his router? |

How do you know you have the "same problem" as the Original Poster, do you also use a wireless connection from home? It's always best to begin your own Thread regarding your issues, it helps to (1) avoid confusion, and (2) allows the OP to get the individual attention he deserves. The web site you listed uses 8 Flash files on the main page, so if it's working for you "Somtimes" then there is nothing wrong with your Browser or your Flash Player version. Perhaps it's a server side issue those "Sometimes" it's not working. If you are using a dialup connection the site can be extreemly slow to load. And he also says that he has worked with both Microsoft directly and his ISP, and they had him reset his router to factory settings and he still has the same problems. And he also says that he has worked with both Microsoft directly and his ISP, and they had him reset his router to factory settings and he still has the same problems. So obviously neither his ISP nor Microsoft were able to help him. Have enable logging in his router. Then see if he is even getting outside the router to make the connection. This makes for easier checking than having him install a packet sniffer on an upstream host between him and the router. Hard to know what difficulties he is experiencing from just the "could not get to some websites" description. Don't know if that is a 404, 502, or other reported error. 404 means he *did* get to the server but that the server could not fulfill his request to find what was requested. This is not the same as a "server not found" error. 5xx messages are issued by the server which meant the had to connect to them. Kind of hard to figure out with WHAT the user is having problems based on the vague description. |

When he tries to go to the American Airlines website while at home, he doesnt get one of your regular error pages, it comes back with a page that says "Opps, this link appears to be broken". Now this just happened today, again. Last night he was at the local library and used their wireless and he was able to get to American Airlines site. When he got the error today, just to make sure the site wasnt down, he went to his wifes laptop and she was able to get to the site. |

Start it up, then make the request again. Save the details. Do the same from the other location. Compare them, it might help spot what's going on. As to the message, that is not from IE. Google Toolbar is generating that message, which suggests Google Toolbar is intercepting the request. Try disabling Google Toolbar and then request again and see what the result is. It's possible that due to some combination of the local cookies on the machine and the IP address of the connection that the AA site is sending a redirection to a site that doesn't work, and then Google Toolbar is popping up that message. -- Dan |

We uninstalled Google toolbar and tried AA again, now it comes back and says "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage". This is IE8, and I am not too familar, but rather than giving an error number, it just has a button that says diagnose connection problems. |

If so, get rid of it. Not compatible with IE8. Purge the TIF and history in IE. Load IE8 in its no add-ons mode. Retest. Perhaps the problem is with his DNS server from home. When he is at other locations, he is using someone else's DNS server. If he is using OpenDNS as his DNS server, have him switch to using his ISP's DNS server (or try the other way around). When he switches, be sure he runs "ipconfig /flushdns" to get rid of any temporary (cached) DNS queries on his host. Using any widgets, like from Yahoo or Google, that are shown on the desktop? If so, tried without them yet? Reboot Windows into its safe mode (with networking) and retest. Has this user ever shutdown Windows (to remove power from the host) and rebooted? Or has he just gone into Standby or Hibernate modes? Before loading IE, have him check Task Manager's Processes tab to ensure there are some hidden instances if iexplore.exe still running. |
