| IE7 Hangs when saving .mht Hi, Sometimes when I try to save a web page as .mht IE7 just hangs. the Cancel button does nothing. When I kill the session in Task Manager it say "Unable to Terminate because it's waiting for a response from you." It certainly isn't waiting, not visibly anyway, there is never any dialogue box. When I select "End Anyway" it kills the window. It also kills any window that spawned the hanging window. Sometimes it closes all my IE windows. What's going on? is there a fix for this problem? |

| Re: IE7 Hangs when saving .mht Hi, 1. Probably won't help, but see if clearing the Temporary Internet Files helps. 2. Not all pages can be saved as MHT files. I find quite a few that can't be. Use a newer OS. Otherwise rename your .mht file to .eml and use a mail client (such as OE) to view them. FYI Robert Aldwinckle --- |

| Re: IE7 Hangs when saving .mht Hi Don, Clearing Temp files doesn't help. This happens independently of whether I clear temp internet files or not. I'm aware not all pages can be saved as .mht When I get those error messages I just save as .htm and it works fine. But thanks very much for suggesting something. What's the problematic issue is that IE hangs claiming it's waiting for a response from me but opens no dialog window to provide said response. So I have to kill the window, which sometimes has cascading effects. Robert "Don Varnau" wrote: > Hi, > 1. Probably won't help, but see if clearing the Temporary Internet Files > helps. > > 2. | Re: IE7 Hangs when saving .mht This is not helpful. And it is premature. IE7 runs on Vista. Plus there's not a single word of explanation or even suspicion of what's causing this problem and thus no guarantee or even indication that anyone reading this thread running XP or earlier then choosing to upgrade would not still see this very same issue. | Re: IE7 Hangs when saving .mht Also, that is not even identifying the issue correctly. The issue happens BEFORE there is even a .mht created. There is no .mht file to rename to anything else, IE is hanging during the Save process while trying to create the .mht. Ok, will do. WinXP SP2 32-bit, IE7 I was unable to apply SP3 because it blue-screened my computer in both Normal and Safe modes. | Re: IE7 Hangs when saving .mht By default, yes. You assume correctly that my system shipped w/ IE6. I installed IE7 later. Then after the SP3 blue-screen IE6 would not work at all. Seems IE7 left pieces around that stopped IE6 from working thru Repair Install. Thankfully I had IE7 downloaded on another computer and reinstalled IE7 so I could get online again. That's what I've been running since, and keeping Updates current. Robert "PA Bear [MS MVP]" wrote: > Was IE7 still installed when you did the Repair Install? > > GettingByOk wrote: > > Thanks. | Re: IE7 Hangs when saving .mht While you may think IE7's working OK, I can guarantee you that it isn't. See... How to perform a repair installation of Windows XP if a later version of Internet Explorer is installed http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917964 Having done the Repair Install without having first uninstalled IE7 (which, chances are, you wouldn't have been able to do without first uninstalling WinXP SP3) had left IE *and* Windows in a "confused state"...which is why IE6 probably wasn't working and why you couldn't install IE7 directly. (I'd very much doubt you're able to reach or use Windows Update and that the computer is fully patched.) Your only recourse now is to backup your personal data then do a format & clean install of Windows. Please note that another Repair Install (AKA in-place upgrade) will NOT fix this! After the clean install, you'll have the equivalent of a "new computer" so take care of everything on the following page before otherwise connecting the machine to the internet or a network and before using a USB key that isn't brand-new or hasn't been freshly formatted: 5 steps to help protect your new computer before you go online http://www.microsoft.com/protect/com...nced/xppc.mspx Best of luck & I wish I had better news for you this glorious Sunday afternoon! -- ~PA Bear GettingByOk wrote:e > By default, yes. | Re: IE7 Hangs when saving .mht PA Bear, Thanks a million. To certainly, and also to Don Varnau. Mr. Aldwinckle is one of the reasons Microsoft gets an undeserved bad reputation for service, but the two of you are gold. You really are. There was no way to avoid doing things the way I did. Installing SP3 had me blue-screened even in Safe mode. I'd even upgraded my old computer to SP3 already with no problem. I did all the due diligence I could, including a test install on a less important machine. The key difference is that my new computer is RAID 0 and my old computer has two SATA ports and is non-RAID. Wiping out my data and applications with a clean reformat/reinstall was my only other option for my new computer and that just didn't make sense if I could avoid doing it. The Repair Install worked fine except, according to your note, it didn't uninstall IE7. The only discernible problems I have now are: ---This occasional intermittent hang while trying to save .mht files ---Having to use Low for my Privacy level on certain sites like this one, StatCounter.com and Google Analytics because they claim my browser is rejecting cookies when it's set to Medium. I can live with that, I guess. It's better than reformatting my RAID 0 config. I was doubtful anything could be done about the hangs but it was worth asking! Thanks again, Robert "PA Bear [MS MVP]" wrote: > While you may think IE7's working OK, I can guarantee you that it isn't. > See... > > How to perform a repair installation of Windows XP if a later version of > Internet Explorer is installed > http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917964 > > Having done the Repair Install without having first uninstalled IE7 (which, > chances are, you wouldn't have been able to do without first uninstalling > WinXP SP3) had left IE *and* Windows in a "confused state"...which is why > IE6 probably wasn't working and why you couldn't install IE7 directly. | Re: IE7 Hangs when saving .mht .....and I am perfectly able to do Windows Updates. I do them regularly. I installed all of the most recent patches except the .Net upgrade IE8, both of which I voluntarily decided not to install. But the rest of the patches installed just fine. So this is a minor but annoying problem, but not nearly as annoying as reinstalling my entire computer again!!! | Re: IE7 Hangs when saving .mht I wouldn't trust the computer myself, Robert, without doing a "wipe and reload." KB917964 really doesn't get into the nitty-gritty of the consequences of what you did, except for this somewhat mild statement in the Introduction: <QP> Before you perform a repair installation of Windows XP, you must uninstall any later version of Internet Explorer. If you do not uninstall the later version of Internet Explorer in this situation, Internet Explorer will no longer work after the repair installation of Windows XP is completed. Specifically, the repair installation does not restore earlier versions of the files in the Program Files\Internet Explorer folder. Therefore, the later version files for Internet Explorer will be incompatible with the Internet Explorer 6 files that are installed in the Windows\System32 folder when you repair the Windows XP installation. </QP> And truth be told, the More Information section contains some "fuzzy logic" IMHO. That being said, you shouldn't ignore its suggestions. Best of luck. GettingByOk wrote: > ....and I am perfectly able to do Windows Updates. I do them regularly. | Re: IE7 Hangs when saving .mht I understand and will read up on that note. My computer's been working for about a year or more after that incident, seems to take all the updates ok, installs and runs new programs and plug-ins ok, plus I have my data and apps backed up on my old computer and I'll be buying a new computer in a couple of mos hopefully. Honestly this and the cookie thing are the only problems I've had since then. A wipe and reinstall of everything would take almost a whole weekend, easily, plus untold time getting my environment back to normal again. Took an entire Saturday just to do a repair install. Then days or more of tuning and environment reconstituting. So I'll see if those notes can give me some non-wipe advice but I think I'm ok overall - I hope! Thanks again, Robert "PA Bear [MS MVP]" wrote: > I wouldn't trust the computer myself, Robert, without doing a "wipe and > reload."
