| Multiple Java Icons When using Pogo games, multiple java icons appear in the notification area - one is visible as allowed by my settings, the others are hidden. After closing IE8, the hidden icons remain until "Show hidden icons" is used and the icons then disappear one at a time as the cursor is hovered over each one. This behavior did not occur with IE7. |

Seems to me this would be normal behavior when using IE8. If you are using tabs each tab is loaded in a different process so if you open up more than on tab to a site that requires java then a java icon is created for each tab that is opened. Each tab loads it's instance of the Virtual Machine(since each tab runs in it's own process) and thus it's own instance of the System Tray icon. Those tray icons would then remain in the system tray until you close the original window that opened the tabs. | Re: Multiple Java Icons It happens the odd time to me using Firefox. I just "mouse over" the two icons and one of them disappears. However Donald's explanation makes a bit of sense. My burning question and I may have to start a new thread is this......can we turn off the Java ticked slot to keep temporary files on the computer?? I get rid of them every day with Crap Cleaner and there are a lot of them. I am very tempted to turn this function off. Between that and the IE temp files, it doesn't take long to get inundated!! Cheers.....Heather "ALB1954" <ALB1954@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:A40E7102-A544-4DAE-97B7-C4794965C544@microsoft.com... > Thank you for your response, however, the icons remain after all > windows and > even IE8 are closed. ????? > > "Donald Anadell" wrote: > >> >> "ALB1954" <ALB1954@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message >> news:19D6B22A-529A-4852-ADE1-66C3780D28AF@microsoft.com... >> >> >I asked Sun......they are clueless and said it must be IE8 >> >problem.... >> >> Seems to me this would be normal behavior when using IE8. | Re: Multiple Java Icons First see this Sun Java page about deleting the JRE cache: http://www.java.com/en/download/help/5000020300.xml Now open Control Panel | Java Control Panel | General | Temporary Internet Files | Settings | Keep temporary internet files on my computer: Uncheck/disable this option, if desired; However, allowing /some/ Sun Java-specific TIF is prolly a good idea so consider setting "amount of disk space to use" to 10MB or lower. Remember: Your computer's memory is there to be used, not preserved (unless you upgraded a POS WinME box to WinXP). <w> So as not to confuse the OP here (ALB1954), please begin a new thread if you have further questions about this, Heather. I can't reproduce your problem here, but that's not to say you don't experience this. The System Tray in Windows XP has always been flakey at best. If I use multiple tabs here with java sites in each tab, I get multiple icons in the System Tray, for reasons explained in my previous post. Those icons will remain in the System Tray here until IE8 is closed, at which time they are removed from the Tray. Not to fluff you off but your problem seems more to do with Operating System(System Tray) itself than IE8 or Sun Java. | Re: Multiple Java Icons Thanks for the info, Pa.......and I didn't upgrade the POS WinME computer cuz the thieves that sold it to me for a lot of money put a 4 yr old motherboard in it and it took Noel and Mike a while to figure out why I couldn't put XP on it. And it crashed on the computer store guy too. So he built me this one. Just wondered about the large amount of temp Java files. If I change it to say 100 (instead of 300+) what happens when they go over 100?? I specialize in *blonde* questions, btw. | Re: Multiple Java Icons > ...If I change it > to say 100 (instead of 300+) what happens when they go over 100?? Just like in IE's TIF, the oldest data is deleted. Mine's been set to 10MB and I've never encountered any problems. (Of course, I frequently delete this cache via ATF-Cleaner, too.)
