| Re: Cannot install Internet Explorer 8 You might give this FixIt KB a shot (ignore the title): http://support.microsoft.com/kb/946414 Otherwise... HOW TO solve IE8 installation problems http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949220 No-charge support for Internet Explorer 8 installation, set-up and usage (only) is available via the phone based on your locale through 31 December 2009. Customers must be running Windows XP or Windows Vista in a non-domain environment. => US & CA Residents: 1-866-234-6020 => Other locales: https://support.microsoft.com/oas/de...px?&prid=13043 My personal recommendations include: => Uninstall all third-party toolbars (e.g., Google; Yahoo; Windows Live) and third-party Windows Themes before installing IE8. => Close all open applications (i.e., anything with a taskbar icon) before installing or uninstalling IE8. => I would strongly recommend disabling your anti-virus application and any anti-spyware application's "system protections" (other than Defender's) before installing (or uninstalling) an IE upgrade. If you're running a third-party firewall, I would recommend disabling it and then enabling the Windows Firewall before installing (or uninstalling) an IE upgrade. => Create a "just in case" Restore Point manually before installing IE8. => Reboot twice after installing or uninstalling IE8. => For best chance of success with IE8, make certain that your anti-virus application, any anti-spyware applications (other than Defender), and your third-party firewall (if any) are supported in IE8 Final before you decide install it. -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-IE, Mail, Security, Windows Client - since 2002 trondbond******.com wrote: > I'm having trouble installing IE8 on my computer. | Re: Cannot install Internet Explorer 8 Hi. Thanks for your reply. I tried the fix, but none of those reg values are present. I've tried pretty much all else that you suggest. And none of the "solutions" on the microsoft-page works. I've even tried uninstalling AV before installing, but no luck. I cannot use free support, as my computer is a part of a domain. I've got full admin rights on my computer. Other Vista-computers in this domain installs IE8 without any problems at all... Any more ideas? Regards Trond |

| Re: Cannot install Internet Explorer 8 I wouldn't hold my breath, but a run of chkdsk and sfc won't hurt. It's conceivable that part of the uninstall information got corrupted an checkdisk might fix it. | Re: Cannot install Internet Explorer 8 I have exactly the same errors you describe. I have tried everything suggested, including switching off virus protection, resetting IE defaults, resetting user settings, manually downloading and installing. Not once, not twice, but 8 times now. And it takes such a long time to finally get to the point.... "updates were incorrectly configured....." SO PLEASE, IF YOU FIND A SOLUTION, LET ME KNOW. I will do the same if do. |

| Same problem here... Hi, I have the same problem. Tried clean boot, stopping my McAfee, ... 10 times at least, wasting hours in the process. My story: I am on Vista Business SP1, English version, regional settings for Denmark. My Vista is a reinstall on a Dell Precision M20 - reinstalled because the factory install had problems with wakeOnLAN. I tried to install the IE8 beta, but got to this problem - everything looked fine until after the reboot where it would count to 100% in stage 3/3 and then say: Unknown error, reverting changes and reboot with IE7. I then waited for the final release of IE8, but the same applies: it goes well up to the very final step, and then reverts. I have colleagues with identical hardware, but they have not reinstalled Vista and not tried the IE8 beta. They have had no problems. I have McAfee, but have tried with it disabled. Norton was never here. I have also tried clean boots, but then Windows Update does not work. I have tried boots without all my usual startups. I have uninstalled Acrobat Reader, 8 and 9. All ideas welcome, although the install-boot-revert-boot cycle is killing me. Luckily, I'm quite happy with Firefox and Chrome... Morten |

- uninstalled McAfee - uinstalled Google toolbar for IE - uninstalled Google Earth plugin - booted in selective mode without my start up programs, and then tried installing IE8 from windows update. Same story. After going to Stage 3/3 - 100%, it reboots, comes up, does some registry checking (white-on-black dos-like screen showing some registry keys) ending with 14294/14294 HKLM\Components\Installers\RegKeySDTable - and then: Updates were not configured correctly. Reverting changes. Giving up. Morten |

Been there, tried that. Well, haven't done the "Reset Windows security settings back to the defaults " - I might try that the next time I have half an hour to waste. Also, I tried changing permissions on %CommonProgramFiles%\Microsoft Shared\VGX\vgx.dll, but I am not allowed to. TrustedInstaller have full control, though. Quote:
But I tried something else: Vista SP2 is out now, so I thought installing that might help me. But... same story. All seems to go well (did not watch closely for the whole process, though), but eventually it gives up and reverts. It gave an error code, but googling on that returned nothing. Have forgottent the error code now. So I guess I am looking at a reinstall. Any tips? Morten |

Here is what I did to fix it. This works for most people, so good luck and I hope it works for you too. Check and see if KB933246 is installed on your computer, if it is remove it. If you don't want to remove it, or if it is not installed, as was my case, inport the following registry key: Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\WINEVT \Publishers\{51bd93ee-1739-4261-b8e8-67970423a2a0}] @="Microsoft-Windows-BitLocker-DrivePreparationTool" "ResourceFileName"=hex(2):25,00,50,00,72,00,6f,00, 67,00,72,00,61,00,6d, 00,46,\ 00,69,00,6c,00,65,00,73,00,25,00,5c,00,42,00,69,00 ,74,00,4c,00,6f, 00,63,00,\ 6b,00,65,00,72,00,5c,00,42,00,64,00,65,00,43,00,66 ,00,67,00,4c,00,6f, 00,67,\ 00,2e,00,64,00,6c,00,6c,00,00,00 "MessageFileName"=hex(2):25,00,50,00,72,00,6f,00,6 7,00,72,00,61,00,6d, 00,46,00,\ 69,00,6c,00,65,00,73,00,25,00,5c,00,42,00,69,00,74 ,00,4c,00,6f, 00,63,00,6b,\ 00,65,00,72,00,5c,00,42,00,64,00,65,00,43,00,66,00 ,67,00,4c,00,6f, 00,67,00,\ 2e,00,64,00,6c,00,6c,00,00,00 "Enabled"=dword:00000001 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\WINEVT \Publishers\{51bd93ee-1739-4261-b8e8-67970423a2a0}\ChannelReferences] "Count"=dword:00000002 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\WINEVT \Publishers\{51bd93ee-1739-4261-b8e8-67970423a2a0}\ChannelReferences \0] @="Microsoft-Windows-BitLocker-DrivePreparationTool/Admin" "Id"=dword:00000010 "Flags"=dword:00000000 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\WINEVT \Publishers\{51bd93ee-1739-4261-b8e8-67970423a2a0}\ChannelReferences \1] @="Microsoft-Windows-BitLocker-DrivePreparationTool/Operational" "Id"=dword:00000011 "Flags"=dword:00000000 After I imported the key I booted with only the Microsoft services running and ran the KB947821.
