WMV files in Outlook Express won't play After installing IE8

As titlte says, ever since I installed IE8, WMV mail attachments in
Outlook Express 6.0 (OE) won't PLAY in Windows Media Player 9.0 (WMP).

I am on WinXP SP3.

I looked at the Folder Options for the WMV File Type and it "appears"
OK, but there must be some subtleties I am missing ;-)

Anyways, I tried various clicking and un-clicking of some options in
the file type dialog box for WMV extension, hoping this would force a
re-write in the registry settings, but it as not worked.

I then remembered that when I had tried the beta of IE8, this had
happened also. Removing the beta of IE8 solved the refusal of WMV file
attachments in OE from PLAYING in WMP when the attachment was opened.

So I did just this with this release of IE8, I proceeded to un-install
it and reverted to IE7 and Voilą my attachments with WMV extensions
now open and PLAY in WMP as they had always have been.

Is there a solution for this behaviour, I would like to have IE8 and
conserve the possibility of receiving Emails with attachments having
WMV extensions and beeing able to have them play in WMP as they were
with IE7 installed by just opening or double-clicking them.

I searched the Net and can't find any post linking IE8 and WMV
attachments stopping to play when received as attachments in OE

[crossposted to WMP newsgroup]

WMV attachments won't /play/ in WMP 11 or WMP 11 doesn't even open?

If you save the WMV to your HDD and double-click on it, what happens?

If you right-click on a WMV file | Open with | Select WMP and check the
"Always open with..." option, does any of the above behavior persist?

Is your anti-virus application configured to scan incoming & outgoing mail?

Which was installed first, WinXP SP3 or IE8 Final (not beta)?

Re: WMV files in Outlook Express won't play After installing IE8

[OK, so I misread your post: You're running WMP 9.]

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)? Were any of these applications running
in the background when you installed and/or uninstall IE8?

Has a Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this machine
(e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)?

Possibly OT: I would strongly recommend disabling AV scanning of incoming
and outgoing mail. It provides no additional protection, it's a primary
cause of corruption in OE (and may be related to your current problem), and
even Symatec says it's not necessary:

<QP>
Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against viruses that
are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect scans
incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive, including email and
email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer on top of this. To
make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep
Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have
the most recent virus definitions.

Re: WMV files in Outlook Express won't play After installing IE8

As my message indicates, I am using WMP 9.0, why you are asking about
WMP 11 ?

If I save the .WMV file attachment to HDD and double-click on it, the
file opens.

When I right-click on a WMV file | Open with | Select WMP and check
the
"Always open with..." option, all of the behaviors persist!

My anti-virus application is configured to scan incoming mail only.

WinXP SP3 was installed first.

Let me add that with IE8 installed and double-clicking an Email
attachment in Outlook Express with a .WMV or .Wm file extension,
results in ONLY opening the Windows Media Player(WMP) and not playing
the file, only showing the title of the previously played file in WMP
9.0

I have deleted all temporary internet files, I have deleted all
index.dat files related to these "temporary internet files". The
incorrect behaviour persists.

I have de-installed IE8 and as before with IE7 installed, my Email
attachment in Outlook Express with a .WMV or .Wm file extension open,
then, normally in WMP 9.0

I , again, re-installed IE8 and the incorrect behaviour resumes.

Thank you for your time in looking into this with me, much
appreciated,
