restore IE7 browser-history & browser-history not being saved

In attempting to correct a problem of browser addresses not saving, the
number of days to save history was lowered to the point of loosing some much
needed URLs.

I would like to recover the correct history file from my backup program.
The difficulty is that I do not know which file to restore and its location
in the maze of folders NOR do I know if this might be a solution to regaining
the lost URLs.

So, in order to locate a three-week-old file backup copy, what is the actual
file path/location to my IE7 browsing-history file OR is there another way to
retrieve something from my backup that will restore the older browsing
history?

In anticipation of restoring the URLs, I have increased the number of days
to keep pages in history.

FYI, I still haven't figured out why IE7 stopped keeping track of my
browsing history.

Thank you so much for any help/suggestions.

It's not just a file, or set of files, the registry is also involved
with a new set of files and directories (because of a different date.)
I wouldn't bother trying.

Did you have a power failure or otherwise shutdown improperly?

Re: restore IE7 browser-history & browser-history not being saved

Hi,
I don't think you will recover the complete history and clearing the History
folder is one of the first steps usually taken to fix AutoComplete problems.
It would be better to save URLs/addresses as Favorites than to rely on the
History folder.

Corruption in the History folder is not uncommon.

But...
Which version of Windows?
Which "backup program" are you using?

Re: restore IE7 browser-history & browser-history not being saved

Robert -
Assumed to the contrary, but hoped it could be as simple as restoring
an older file. As to your power failure/improper shutdown query, either
could have happened but can't say for sure.

Don -
I do save things to favorites when I determine that they are, indeed, a
Favorite but have been leaning on History as a quick-reference road map for
my visually dependant memory. Sure would be helpful to have the corruption
problem eradicated!

As to your program questions, I'm running XP Professional v.2002 with
Service Pack 2 and my backup program is Norton Ghost 9.0

Cheers!

Re: restore IE7 browser-history & browser-history not being saved

Hi,
In XP your History folder would be at C:\Documents and settings\your account
name\Local Settings\History. Make sure that Hidden and System files are
visible (Folder Options> View.)

I don't think you will be able to copy the backed up History folder to that
location and have it work, but I guess it's worth a try.

Again, you won't be restoring the History, but it may be useful to copy the
backup History folder to another location and examine it with IEHistoryView
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/iehv.html which allows you to search, sort by
name, date, etc.

Also I would recommend keeping no more than 25-30 days of browsing history
just to reduce the possibility of History folder corruption.
