Recent browser history not saved

Since Wednesday July 9th, I've noticed that IE7 is no longer saving my recent
browser history. I thought, since I already had 53 weeks of history saved,
that it might be a memory issue; and, that I had gone over the browser's
limit.

But, my Disk Space setting was at 500 (which I then changed to the maximum
1024). Also, the "Days to Keep" setting was set at at 999 (the maximum).
Still, no luck. I click on "Today" in the History, and nothing happens. It
doesn't expand with a list of the sites I've visited.

The browser works fine -- it just won't save my browsing history anymore.

Could this be a side effect of Microsoft Update KB951748?

Thanks.

Do you use anything from Trend Micro?

RE: Recent browser history not saved

In case anyone were wondering:

I do use Zonealarm on my computer. However, the Cache Cleaner options for
IE7 are set only to clean the cache, locked Index.dat files (whatever they
are), and IE cookies. The hard drive options are set to clean: Recycle Bin;
Temporary Files Directory; and, Scandisk file fragments. These have always
been the settings . . . and, I've never had this problem before with no
browser history.

I had to re-load Zonealarm after the recent MSFT hotfix glitch. Could ZA be
screwing up the settings? Don't know.

Re: Recent browser history not saved

Trend Micro? Not that I am aware of.

I did download and uninstall some freeware last week. But, all files were
scanned for viruses and spyware by Zonealarm Internet Security Suite before
installation. I did have to do some "clean up" by searching for and deleting
files after the freeware was uninstalled. But, I am *reasonably* sure that
this is not the issue -- especially, since the browser history was still
being kept days after everything had been uninstalled, scanned, cleaned out,
and scanned again.

I've run the Scandisk tool for C:\ a few times as well.

I re-loaded IE7 just to see if that might help. Nada.

Here's what happens: I click on "Today" or "Tuesday" in the browser history
that is open on the lefthand side . . . and, it doesn't expand. The mouse
pointer flickers for a half-second. But, nothing happens.

Re: Recent browser history not saved

Hi,
Both your History setting (999 days) and the cache size (500-1024 MB) are
too large. These settings are often recommended:
History ... 20-30 days (at most)
Temporary Internet Files ... 50-100 MB.

Clear the History and Temporary Internet Files and try those settings.

Hope this helps,
Don

Re: Recent browser history not saved

Hi,
There isn't necessarily a limit, but a larger History folder is going to be
more prone to corruption. The Temporary Internet Files folder, similarly, is
more likely to cause problems when it's too large. At some point (maybe
around 500 MB - wild guess) the cache (Temporary Internet Files) won't cause
faster loading of webpages (one of its primary purposes) because checking
for newer versions of the cached files will take as long as re-downloading
the files would.

Why can you enter 999 days into the field? I don't know. Maybe it sounded
like a good idea at the time. I think, but am not certain, that 999 has been
the largest number you could enter into the "Days to keep pages in History"
field for years - since IE2 or IE3.

Re: Recent browser history not saved

EXCELLENT! Thanks for the info. I am not a computer tech or geek.
So, this information really helps me understand what might be going
on.

I'll revise my settings accordingly.

Thanks again.

Re: Recent browser history not saved

Nope -- IE7 is still not saving my browsing history.

I changed the settings to 400 Disk Space and 366 Days-to-Save; cleared
the Temp files cache; deleted ca. 5 weeks of previous history. But,
when I click on "Today" in the History pane, all it does is flicker,
and refuse to expand.

Any other thoughts? I'm at my wit's end.
