| Internet Explorer is not responding Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo T9300 @ 2.50GHz 4.00 GB RAM 32-bit Windows Vista Home Premium (I know... won't access all 4 GB RAM. Please don't comment.) Service Pack 1 Internet Explorer 7.0.6001.1800 New computer. Have restored it to factory settings a couple of times trying to resolve the intermittent problem of IE freezing up. With no particular pattern, Internet Explorer stops responding and the only choices I have are: 1.. Restart the program 2.. Close the program 3.. Wait for the program to respond All three options are futile. Restarting the program closes all tabs and any form I may have been working on is lost. Closing the program is the same as restarting it. Waiting on it to respond has never resulted an anything but a waste of more time. I am at my wits end trying to figure out what to do. |

| Re: Internet Explorer is not responding Hi, It may take some time to troubleshoot this, but look for an incompatible add-on. See: http://www.enhanceie.com/ie/troubleshoot.asp for troubleshooting information. More at: IEBlog Troubleshooting and Internet Explorer’s (No Add-ons) Mode: http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2006/07/25/678113.aspx The troublesome program may not show up as an add-on. Disable other security, privacy, ad-blocking, appearance tweaking programs to see if one of them is causing the problem. Any program that interacts with Internet Explorer could be causing this. A firewall will probably not be causing this problem, but be sure to turn on the Windows Firewall from Control Panel> Windows Firewall before disabling a third-party firewall or security suite during testing. - - - - - More: 936213- How to optimize or reset Internet Explorer 7: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936213/en-us 936214- How to troubleshoot compatibility problems that affect IE7 in Windows Vista: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936214 (Also applies to XP) [Guided help] Internet Explorer stops responding, stops working, or restarts: http://support.microsoft.com/gp/pc_ie_intro 926431- Error message when you start IE7 or try to access a website: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/926431 936215- How to troubleshoot Internet Explorer 7 issues in Windows Vista: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936215/en-us Hope this helps, Don [MS MVP- IE] "VistaNewbie" <wpla********.com> wrote in message news:51B78361-AFBF-43FF-B78E-5EDA55C182B7@microsoft.com... | Re: Internet Explorer is not responding 1.. SP1 was preinstalled on the notebook. I bought it about two months ago and it was it shipped with the service pack already installed. 2.. Norton Internet Security (also preinstalled by HP). Windows Security Center reports the following: a) Firewall: Norton firewall is turned on. Windows firewall is turned off. b) Automatic updating is turned on and machine is "fully patched" at Windows Update. d) Norton Antivirus (Malware protection) is turned on and all drives have been scanned for viruses. e) Norton Spyware Protection and Windows Defender are turned on. f) User Account Control is turned on. Prior to reading your reply I had not noticed that there are 2 spyware programs running concurrently. Although I do not believe that should cause IE to freeze up, I have turned off Windows Defender and I will see if the problem goes away. Needless to say, intermittent freezes are tedious to troubleshoot and performing more than one corrective task at the same time me may resolve the problem but one will never know which action actually worked. | Re: Internet Explorer is not responding I'd very much doubt that Defender's causing any problems here. Defender is entirely compatible with most third-party security applications. However, the same cannot necessarily be said of Norton Internet Security and Vista, I'm afraid. Try this: 1. After making certain you have a copy of your Product Key, uninstall all Norton software (including any Norton Add-ons and LiveUpdate) via Programs and Features | Uninstall (http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/win...f56ca1033.mspx). 2. Enable the Windows Firewall (http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Win...fa1c01033.mspx). NB: You're "working without a net" now: Don't to ANYTHING else online (e.g., browsing; reading email; chatting) except #XX below until your anti-virus application has been installed and fully updated! 3. Download and run this removal tool: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...05033108162039 [Save the tool to your desktop then Right-click | Run as Administrator to run it.] 4. Reboot and immediately install Avira AntiVir* (free), or the 30-day free trial version of, e.g., NOD32**, KAV7*** 5. Manually update your new anti-virus application then run a full system scan. Do your problems persist now? [Don't forget to subscribe to your new AV app or uninstall it then reinstall the Norton application before the free-trial period expires! | Re: Internet Explorer is not responding I will try your suggestions. Norton Internet Security is running on my desktop PC without a problem but the desktop computer is running Win XP Pro, not Vista. I have suspected Norton but I have hesitated to fool with it because it is such a tedious program to unintall/reinstall/configure. It updates itself with a whole lot of overhead when one runs LiveUpdate, and installing Norton Internet Security without running LiveUpdate makes no sense. | Re: Internet Explorer is not responding Yes, including using the Symatec removal tool to uninstall Norton. As I mentioned in my previous post, I've been around for a while and I was aware of the removal tool because Norton doesn't always uninstall cleanly from the Control Panel. I had used that tool with previous Norton removals on other computers. I installed Avira AntiVir and I am using Windows Firewall and Windows Defender. I have run hardware diagnostics to ensure that the hard drives are not damaged and that the video drivers are OK. Updated BIOS from the manufacturer's website. Nothing has helped. Notebook is under warranty and it has been checked out by HP technicians for hardware problems. All hardware is working as supposed to. FYI, on a hunch, I downloaded and intalled the Apple Safari browser. I've been logged on the internet and browsing for several hours without a single glitch. I need to figure out how to perform certain tasks with the Safari browser, like creating shortcuts, tab browsing (if possible), etc. So far though, I am inclined to give up on IE and use Safari. Kinda like getting a life. "PA Bear [MS MVP]" <PABearMVP******.com> wrote in message news:OSDjvhJ2IHA.5944@TK2MSFTNGP04.phx.gbl... Did you do all five (5) of the steps I posted? I have suspected Norton but I have hesitated to fool with it because it is such a tedious program to unintall/reinstall/configure. It updates itself with a whole lot of overhead when one runs LiveUpdate, and installing Norton Internet Security without running LiveUpdate makes no sense. 2.
