| IE7 wont work!! Wrote a few days ago about friend's troubled computer (no updates/anti-virus for years). Attempted to clean and fix with updates, LiveOneCare, and Spybot....got pretty close, except IE7 would not work....just hung with circle spinning( never even timed out). Went back to IE6, no problems. Re installed IE7 and same problem. Could run "quick scan "from LiveOneCare, but full scans would get to about 80% and freeze (on IE...hmmm). Had Firefox, so I know I was connected and able to access internet. Several posts suggested starting from scratch, which I did last night. Now, I am running XPSP3 (with IE7 update installed after SP3) after formatting HD and fresh Windows install, and still having same problem with IE7!!! When I try to open IE7 without addons, just freezes, and I have to use task manager to close it. I have tried resetting IE settings from Advanced tab of Internet Options with no luck......please, any ideas? Driving me crazy!!! (sorry if this question is too long) |

| Re: IE7 wont work!! You likely have an incomplete or damaged installation if you did not carefully follow the pre-installation preparation described here: http://www.ie-vista.com/known_issues.html#pre-install. Uninstall IE 7 (which returns you to IE 6) by following these directions: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927177 ....and... http://www.ie-vista.com/kbase2.html and then re-install IE 7 following the directions above. Download the IE 7 installer from Microsoft and install directly from your hard disk: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/dow.../getitnow.mspx This frequently works better than going through Microsoft/Windows Update. --- Leonard Grey Errare humanum est fullerne wrote: > Wrote a few days ago about friend's troubled computer (no updates/anti-virus > for years). The link is not for Vista. You can't install IE 7 on Vista. -- Frank Saunders, MS-MVP OE/WM Reply in Newsgroup, not by email. |

| Re: IE7 wont work!! I have followed all of the advice in the links that Leonard posted and still have no luck.....when the IE7 installer finishes, it tells me that it could not install all of the updates....it tells me to restart, and then open IE and go to Windows Update to get the remaining updates....but IE still just hangs. I can't get to Windows Update. I followed the advice in the link regarding rebooting twice after uninstall of IE6 and after install of IE7....I am at a loss here.... |

| RE: IE7 wont work!! I have also figured out that IE will work when I use Safe Mode with Networking. I tried several websites to make sure. However, while I can go to Windows Update in Safe Mode, when I choose "Express" or "Custom", I get an error message that says "The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view." So, your two symptoms combined tell you that something that you are running at start up (perhaps visible using msconfig) is interfering with the operation of IE. Manage Add-ons can only deal with add-ons, typically .dlls which are run as extensions to IE. If something is running independently as a separate task and interfering with IE the only thing you can do is identify it and stop it. BTW an example of such an interferer is Google's Desktop search bar (but that is just an example.) Another tack to try to identify the problem task would be simply to issue tasklist (in a cmd window) in each case. If you don't have tasklist you could get a similar effect from msinfo32.exe /category SWEnvRunningTasks I'm suggesting you try either of those instead of Task Manager's Processes tab simply because they allow you to capture the running tasks and thus will make a comparison of the two cases easier. Process Explorer if you have that could also be used to capture such a list. > I tried several websites to make sure.
