Internet Explorer 7 temp file size

I am running Windows XP SP2 with explorer 7. The size of my temp file disk
space allocation is automatically changing. I have seem it greater than
4000mb. When I select browzer history, settings, I get the file to large
message and a request to reset the file allocation size to 1024mb. Of course
this problem has slowed down my surfing. Can any suggest what the problem
might be and how to fix it.

Thanks in advance

Re: Internet Explorer 7 temp file size

Are you referring to Temporary Internet Files (Tools > Internet Options
> Browsing history - Settings > Disk space to use)? AFAIK only the user

that can change the amount of disk space to use, unless the computer is
infected. Could your computer be infected?

Re: Internet Explorer 7 temp file size

Yes you are correct that is what I am refering to. I am of the same opinion
as you, I should be the only one that can change disk space use. I do have
a firewall and virus protection installed. I ran a virus scan with no
results. Does anyone know of a virus out there that attacks temp file disk
space allocation.

Re: Internet Explorer 7 temp file size

How about non-viral infections?(Some examples are spyware, adware,
keyloggers, rootkits and trojans.)

If you do not have protection against all types of malicious software,
scan your system with /several/ of the better free online scanners, such
as (no order implied):

Kaspersky Antivirus (http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner)
Panda ActiveScan (http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan)
Sophos
(http://www.sophos.com/products/free-...ection-test.ht
ml)
Avast! (http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-virus-cleaner.html)
GrisSoft AVG (http://www.grisoft.com/doc/34/ww/crp/0)

HijackThis is a program that searches your computer for signs of
infection. The program produces a detailed log that you can submit to
volunteer experts free of charge for analysis. More information here:

http://www.whatthetech.com/hijackthis_v2/

You can post your HiJack This logs in several forums (NOT here), such as
this one:

http://forums.whatthetech.com/Hijack...moval_f27.html

MPORTANT: Please submit your HijackThis log to only one forum.

If none of the above remove the malware, you may want to show the
computer to a professional.

1. CCleaner - Free
Cleans temporary internet files, cookies, history, recent urls, application
MRUs, etc. ...
http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/
If Windows Defender is utilized go to Applications, under Utilities
uncheck "Windows Defender".

2. SuperAntispyware - Free
http://www.superantispyware.com/supe...freevspro.html
After the software is updated, it is suggested scanning the system in Safe
Mode.
How do you boot to Safe Mode?
By pressing/tabbing F8 (or F5 on some keyboards) during re-boot.
Alternatively:
click onto Start==>Run, type "msconfig" (without quotation marks), click
OK. Then click onto BOOT.INI tab and 'check' /SAFEBOOT then OK and click
Restart. To go back to Normal Mode, you must access the System
Configuration utility again and click the General tab then click/check the
radio button 'Normal Startup'- load all device drivers and services'.
A description of the Safe Mode Boot options in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=315222

3. Download/execute David H. Lipman's MULTI_AV.EXE from the URL:
http://www.pctipp.ch/ds/28400/28470/Multi_AV.exe
http://www.pctipp.ch/downloads/dl/35905.asp
English:
http://www.raymond.cc/blog/archives/...irus-for-free/

To use this utility, perform the following...
Execute; Multi_AV.exe {Note: You must use the default folder C:\AV-CLS}
Choose; Unzip
Choose; Close
Execute; C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT
{or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS}
NOTE: You may have to disable your software FireWall or allow WGET.EXE to
go through your FireWall to allow it to download the needed AV vendor
related files.
C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT -- {or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS}
This will bring up the initial menu of choices and should be executed in
Normal Mode.
This way all the components can be downloaded from each AV vendor's web
site.
The choices are; Sophos, Trend, McAfee, Kaspersky, Exit this menu and
Reboot the PC.
You can choose to go to each menu item and just download the needed files
or you can download the files and perform a scan in Normal Mode. Once you
have downloaded the files needed for each scanner you want to use, you
should reboot the PC into Safe Mode [F8 key during boot] and re-run the
menu again and choose which scanner you want to run in Safe
Mode. It is suggested to run the scanners in both Safe Mode and Normal
Mode.
When the menu is displayed hitting 'H' or 'h' will bring up a more
comprehensive PDF help file.

Temporary Internet Files (TIF) should be set at 50 to 100 MB. When you get
up above 1 GB like you mention IE bets confused.
