I have Internet Explorer version 7.0.5730.11 on my desktop computer running
windows xp service pack 2 and some months ago the following started. When I
open Internet Explorer I get the error message
"Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. we are
sorry for the inconvenience."

I am also asked to please tell Microsoft about this problem but when I click
on the send error tab it never completes the task.

I have found if I drag the error box of the screen I can use Internet
Explorer all OK but this is annoying.
I think I consulted a Microsoft user group, maybe even this one, and it was
suggested I had some malware on my system. AGV free virus checker has not
found anything neither has Microsoft windows defender.
I think the problem is that I also have Firefox installed. Have now added
Safari too.

This same error message has just started to happen on my laptop computer.
Internet explorer is the only web browser I have installed on this machine.
I conclude that Internet Explorer is very "buggy" and still needs some
ironing out

I know of three causes for the vast majority of such problems:
1. You might have incompatible add-ons:
Go to Start | All Programs | Accessories | System Tools
and click Internet Explorer (No Add-ons).

2. Tools | Internet Options | Advanced
Scroll to the bottom and click Reset Internet Explorer Settings. Read this

Note that the Reset IE Settings button will delete AutoComplete data (such
as passwords.) Do you have those backed up?

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?
For quite a few people it's by installing programs like Messenger Plus,
whose ads for
malware don't identify the malware as such and try to convince you that you
owe it to the author. See also:

Don't ever do a "default" install of anything. Always choose Custom and see
what else is being carried along. Don't install any extras you're not sure
of.
