| Re: connection to the server was reset You're not in WinXP-land anymore <wink> and you need to stop thinking WinXP. I think you'd best spend some time familiarizing yourself with Vista's enhanced security features, Craig. Start | Help & Support is a good place to start, or see http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Win...S/default.mspx Ideally, you should be running as a Standard User, not the Administrator nor with Admin privileges. Here's a good KB article on User Account Control (UAC): http://support.microsoft.com/kb/922708. Also see the User Accounts section here: http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Win.../security.mspx With UAC enabled (recommended for your safety), IE is running in Protected Mode, something else you need to understand: http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Win...013031033.mspx Finally, here is a list of Vista-specific newsgroups where you can ask questions and learn: microsoft.public.windows.vista.administration_acco unts_passwords microsoft.public.windows.vista.file_management microsoft.public.windows.vista.games microsoft.public.windows.vista.general microsoft.public.windows.vista.hardware_assessment microsoft.public.windows.vista.hardware_devices microsoft.public.windows.vista.installation_setup microsoft.public.windows.vista.mail microsoft.public.windows.vista.music_pictures_vide o microsoft.public.windows.vista.networking_sharing microsoft.public.windows.vista.performance_mainten ance microsoft.public.windows.vista.print_fax_scan microsoft.public.windows.vista.security -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-IE, Mail, Security, Windows Desktop Experience - since 2002 AumHa VSOP & Admin http://aumha.net DTS-L http://dts-l.net/ craigdp854 wrote: > i think so, im am the admin, is there anything else thatr i have to select > or deselect to set the permissions correctly? > > "PA Bear [MS MVP]" wrote: >> Does your User Account have the necessary permissions/privileges to >> download things? >> -- >> craigdp854 wrote: >>> i have bought a new pc with vista and when i use ie7 i cannot download >>> anything from any of the web sites i use, i dont think it has anything >>> todo >>> with my router (Netgear dg834g)or McAfee (2007 version) because i have >>> the >>> same version of McAfee on my old pc with windows xp and use ie7 on that >>> pc >>> and i can download everything i want, normal browsing with the visa pc >>> is >>> fine but when i try to download anything, it either says "connection to >>> the >>> the server was reset" or it just closes the download window and does >>> nothing, any advice would be a great help. >>> Many thanks. | Re: connection to the server was reset I have done a complete factory reset, adding one programme at a time to see what the effects were and McAfee has no effect, when i first had the vista pc i used the 30day trial of norton and that gave me more problems than McAfee. Because i used McAfee on my old pc's i just upgraded to the latest version. "Bob" wrote: > McAfee is known to cause many problems. | Re: connection to the server was reset Aha! Follow these steps, in order, Craig: 1. Uninstall the McAfee application again via Add/Remove Programs, then run the McAfee removal tool: http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocumen...e&type=TS&ia=1 2. If you've not yet uninstalled the Norton application *and* "LiveUpdate" via Add/Remove Programs, please do so now, then run this removal tool and reboot the machine: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...05033108162039 3. Now reinstall the McAfee application. Norton and McAfee applications are notorious for not uninstalling cleanly. After running the McAfee removal tool in Step #1, take a look at the log created (before you delete it) to get an idea of what had been left behind. Norton is much worse but I don't think there's a log created. Let us know how you make out. -- ~PA Bear craigdp854 wrote: > I have done a complete factory reset, adding one programme at a time to > see > what the effects were and McAfee has no effect, when i first had the vista > pc i used the 30day trial of norton and that gave me more problems than > McAfee. | Re: connection to the server was reset Sorry to butt in and top post but he will need help seeing the log in Step #1 below, I still could not view the log after removal completion, although the option was there. The dialog box to reboot came up so fast after the McAfee removal it disabled the view log button. How do you get around this? Again apoligies.
