back button

When I click on certain links, especially pdf files, I am taken to the link,
but cannot click the back button to return to the original site. The back
button is no longer highlighted. I am forced to start over to return to my
original site.
btw-I have Windows 98, IE 7.0

RE: back button

I have the same problem I think, but I'm using XP with IE7.

It only seems to happen on one site, but the back and forward buttons are
greyed out and cannot be clicked. I can use the keyboard shortcut (alt+left)
OK and the browsing history menu is correctly populated. I would prefer to
simply click the button to move backwards though - can anyone suggest why
this should happen please?
