Norton Internet Security 2008 doesn't have ad-blocking & IE6

I was using Norton Internet Security (NIS) 2007 until I upgraded today to NIS
2008, primarily b/c NIS 2008 has faster scan times (which proved true when I
tested it).

I discovered after the intstall of 2008, all Norton 2008 products no longer
have the ad-blocking (aka 'ad banner' blocking) capability.

While I am using the pop-up blocker in IE 6, I don't know which product I
should get to block banner ads when I surf. Is there a recommendation(s)?

Any (ad-blocker, banner ad blocker software) recommendations would be very
appreciated!!!

Thanks!
:)

Computer specs:
XP Pro SP2, IE6 SP2, NIS 2008, Spysweeper, Pentium Centrino Duo, 2GB Ram,
Office 2003 Pro, OE6

Re: Norton Internet Security 2008 doesn't have ad-blocking & IE6

Vincenzo,

Thanks for your assistance.

I did already install the Add-On Pack for NIS 2008 (as I have always done in
prior NIS versions).
Unfortunately, the add-on pack for NIS 2008 does NOT include either the 'ad
blocker' or 'pop-up blocker' that the add-on packs for NIS 2007, NIS 2006
etc. included.

Also, Norton said that you can't use the add-on for NIS 2007 for NIS 2008-m
not compatible. And, they also said all Norton 2008 products NO longer
have ad-blocking capability. Norton 360 Version 2 does have pop-up blocking
capability but no ad-blocking capability.

Thanks in adavnce for anyone's recommendations (on ad-blocker, 'bannerad
blocker' software)- very appreciated!
:)

Re: Norton Internet Security 2008 doesn't have ad-blocking & IE6

Thanks but Norton tech suypport said yesterday there is no current 2008
Norton product that has the ad blocking, and no fix unless you go back to
2007 (which I don't want to do b/c scan times are much slower in 2007 NIS).

Does anyone have a software recommendation that speficially blocks
ad-banners that can be used in conjunction with NIS 2008, Spysweeper and
IE6,?

This willl not only be helping me but aslo the many Norton users who are (or
will soon) find themselves with the same issue as they migrate to 2008 Norton
products, and discover that the ad-banner/ads blocking function is no longer
included in any current year Norton product.

Thanks very much for any assistance from others reading this post!!

Re: Norton Internet Security 2008 doesn't have ad-blocking & IE6

To other readers of this posting (other than Vincenzo-MVP:,

Does anyone know of ad-blocker, 'banner ad blocker software products that
will work in conjunction with NIS 2008 and Spysweeper?

Note, even if I updated to IE7, there doesn't appear to be an ad blocking
(ad banner blocking) option in IE7, only the usual pop-up blocker featurte.
(btw the second weblink link re: IE7 in Vincenzo's posting is no longer valid
on microsfot's website)

Thanks in advance for any assisatnce.

Re: Norton Internet Security 2008 doesn't have ad-blocking & IE6

Bob,

Thanks. I have it blocked already but that doesn't seem to be the 'cure'.

My dilemma is do 1) I go back to NIS 2007 with slower scan times and get
back the ad blocking capability, 2) keep NIS 2008 and find a good
ad-blocking software that blocks the ad banners Norton had done, or 3) just
cope with the slower webpages deployments in NIS 2008.

I had heard about the following programs, but I don't know them and wouldn't
know which one, if any, is the best- here they are (if there is one not
listed that is considered top-notch I'd love to know about it!!):

http://www.cdkm.com/
http://www.superadblocker.com/
http://www.morpheussoftware.net/sab/

Thanks again!
:)

The lack of ad-blocking capability in Norton 2008 products makes IE run a
lower speed despite being connected

Chocolatenutubet,

Have you done any recent scans for adware and spyware? You could run
Spybot S&D, AdAware and some of the other adware removing applications. You
may have a ton of adware on your system. I don't know.
Have you deleted all the unnecessary cookies? Does your firewall block
webbugs? You are probably receiving these banner ads because they are not
being blocked (yes, I know that is apparent) and they are relating to
something already embedded on your system. But then again, I don't know sh_t
compared to most of the contributors to this discussion group. I could be
just blowing hot air.
In any event, I have chosen to allow all first party cookies and
session cookies. I block ALL third party cookies. I don't have a problem
with webbugs. The only popup blocker I have ever used is the one native to
Windows. I haven't seen a banner ad in such a long time I don't even think
about them. A few years ago I used ZoneAlarm Security Suite and blocked
webbugs but I've found that to be really unnecessary. I've been using the
native Windows Firewall for a few months now and to the best of my knowledge
it doesn't block such things. I could be wrong.
I really don't know why you would be receiving an abundance of banner
ads. Actually, the only ads I ever see are the ones that are part of the
actual webpage. I haven't seen a popup ad for months, unless it's a popup I
have chosen to allow on certain websites. I guess I'm lucky.
I hope you solve your problem. I know how aggravating and frustrating
these ads can be. There seems to be a lot of ad-blocker software available
and many toolbars containing ad-blocking abilities but I haven't used any of
them. I can't give you a recommendation. I would go to one of the websites
that evaluate software and check out their reviews on the ad blockers or I
would simply type "ad blocker reviews" in a searchbar and evaluate some of
the results.

C.B.
