IE7 in windows vista won't display some secure web sites

I can't display https://webmail.freeshell.org. I get an error message saying
"Internet explorer cannot display the webpage". This website has a
self-signed security certificate, as I found out when I went to it with the
lynx browser in Unix shell, which displayed it fine.
Also when I log in to this group I get the same error message. But it logs
me in.
I tried things like turning on SSP and TLS, ran Windows Defender on my
computer to see if I have viruses, etc.
What's going on?
Laura

Re: IE7 in windows vista won't display some secure web sites

Hi Laura,

The problem is on their side with their dns servers. Try navigating to
mx.freeshell.org (the last hop from a tracert test) You will see it resolve
back to webmail.freeshell.org and wont load in IE7.

Try accessing your web mail from the homepage
http://sdf.lonestar.org/index.cgi

Regards.

Re: IE7 in windows vista won't display some secure web sites

Running IE7 in WinXP, I'm taken to a different but related page that says...

<QP>
There is a problem with this website's security certificate.
The security certificate presented by this website was not issued by a
trusted certificate authority.
Security certificate problems may indicate an attempt to fool you or
intercept any data you send to the server.
<snip>
</QP>

There have been recurring problems after logging in to post a message via
http://www.microsoft.com/communities...s/default.mspx or
http://support.microsoft.com/newsgroups/. If you're presented with a "Page
cannot be displayed" error after logging in, simply go back to either URL
and you should find that you're logged in.

Do you have the most recent Root Certificates update installed (usually
listed as an Option update at Windows Update)? Is the machine fully patched
at Windows Update?

What anti-virus or "internet security" suite are you running? What
third-party firewall, if any?

That's what I should be seeing, but I don't. All I get is the error message
that IE can't display the webpage. Is the self-signed certificate the reason
why IE won't show me the webpage, and if so, how can I get it to show it to
me?

I don't know if I have the Root certificates update installed. How could I
find it to install it?
As for Windows updates, the ones that are labelled "important" are
automatically installed. The ones labelled "optional" or "recommended"
haven't been installed. Some of those are updates for Windows Vista, but
none described as updates for internet explorer haven't been installed. If I
installed the "recommended" updates for Windows Vista would it maybe fix the
problem?
I don't have anti-virus software running. Windows Defender is running. The
firewall is on. I tried adding the SSL port to the firewall, that didn't do
it. I tried taking the firewall down and I wasn't able to load the page.
The firewall is what came with Windows Vista.

I tried that, but I don't know what it means. What is the problem with
their dns servers? I tried looking up the numeric address for
webmail.freeshell.org and what I got was the numeric address for
mx.freeshell.org, when I typed that in I got the same error message, that the
page won't load. But does this indicate a problem with the dns server? I
can load the web page in lynx OK - from a different computer, not theirs -
wouldn't that mean the dns server is OK?
When I get the error message that IE can't display the webpage, and I try
"diagnose connection problems" I get a message that "could not connect to the
secure web server webmail.freeshell.org - the host may be down or may not
support a secure connection".
I can't read web mail from their main page so far as I know (?)
thanks
Laura

No anti-virus? Then all bets are off. Good luck.

Do you have a proxy? A proxy could cause symptoms like this.
E.g. it happens when I insert Fiddler2 between IE and the server.

Oh. I see the same symptom, even without Fiddler.
So, it's as you say, the certificate isn't trusted.
Then you will just have to keep clicking on
Continue to this website (not recommended)
whenever you get it.

Good luck

I don't get any "continue to this website" message. It would be fine if I
did. All I get is a message saying "internet explorer cannot display the
webpage.

I scanned my whole computer with an antivirus program, it didn't find any
viruses.

I've seen the problem described elsewhere. For example:
http://blogs.atlassian.com/developer...a_and_ssl.html -
this one sounds like they actually have some info about the problem.
Apparently when they make the certificate they have to specify "-keyalg RSA".

Or http://confluence.atlassian.com/disp...r+SSL+or+HTTPS

Comments? It's not clear what to make of all the gobbledegook. Is there an
update or some other way to fix this problem in IE, or is it something the
owner of the certificate has to change?

I installed all the "recommended" updates that were waiting but it didn't
fix anything (obviously, otherwise I'd be saying so!)

That's a link, not a message. However, the page is titled:

Certificate Error: Navigation Blocked

and the heading is:

There is a problem with this website's security certificate.

> did. All I get is a message saying "internet explorer cannot display the

Well then perhaps you have some combination of security options
(in Options, Advanced tab, Security section) which is causing you
not to see the warning page that I get?

To make sure that you can actually see that message in some circumstances
enter:

res://ieframe.dll/invalidcert.htm?SSLError=16777216

(as found using the TIF viewer, Alt-T,O,Alt-S,V and right-click, Properties)

Good luck
