| Internet explorer cannot display webpage I don't know what else to do? I've tried disabling add-ons and resetting the browser and still can't connect to the net. Yahoo messenger, Skype and MSN are all online and even this service but my problem seems to be limited to the Internet explorer. It just won't get through. Keeps giving me 'internet explorer cannot display webpage'. I have Vista Basic and Iam sure its the latest IE browser that I've got here. Anyone can help me? Oh yeah I have just installed the latest Windows Updates yesterday afternoon and from then I've been having this problem. Please can someone advice me on what next to do? |

| RE: Internet explorer cannot display webpage Error message after you install a Windows Internet Explorer 7 update from Windows Update or from Microsoft Update: "Webpage cannot be displayed": http://support.microsoft.com/kb/942818 If tweaking your third-party firewall's settings don't help, try the following: 1. Disable your anti-virus application, any real-time protection provided by an anti-spyware application (except for Windows Defender; includes Spybot Tea Timer, SpySweeper Guards, AVG AS guard.exe, etc.), disable any third-party firewall AND enable the Windows Firewall. NB: You're "working without a net" now: Don't to ANYTHING else online (e.g., browsing; reading email; chatting) except #4 below until your anti-virus application has been re-enabled! If you're running ZA Free firewall, you may need to uninstall it instead of disabling it. 2. Uninstall "Security Update for Windows Internet Explorer 7 (KB944533)" via Add/Remove Programs (make sure Show Updates box is checked at top right) and reboot. 3. Re-do #1 above. 4. Open Windows Update and install any Critical Updates offered (e.g., KB944533). 5. Reboot > Make sure everything in #1 above is enabled again and, if applicable, disable the Windows Firewall and enable your third-party firewall. -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-IE, Mail, Security, Windows Desktop Experience - since 2002 AumHa VSOP & Admin http://aumha.net DTS-L http://dts-l.net/ "Fiji Flyer" wrote: > I don't know what else to do? | Re: Internet explorer inop & Anti-virus To begin the process I was quoted by PA Bear I need to disable my anti-virus. Can someone show me where to do that. I looked around the security centre and can't find anything there. Help and support suggested to seek the help section that came with my anti-virus. I still can't find that. Surely there must be someway of disabling this thing. I have a vista basic and AVG free version. Please help. All this is to do with fixing my IE browser. | Re: Internet explorer inop & Anti-virus I can't phacken believe it. I disabled the antivirus via windows defender>tools>software explorer>programs at start up>AVG>disable. Then I uninstalled Security Update for Win IE 7 (KB944533) then I rebooted/restarted. Then tried to disable again but didn't have to cause it was still disabled as I expected so anyway did steps 4 & 5 and still IE browser still doesn't phucken work. What the phuck is going on. Was this supposed to be an update or a hijack? Now how the hell do I get to the net to find another browser. I've had enough of this bull****. | Re: Internet explorer inop & Anti-virus Hi, To prevent AVG from loading at startup, for testing purposes, go to Start> Run> (type in) msconfig> Startup tab. Uncheck AVG components. There should be several. Restart the computer. Also, it would be helpful if you quoted the message you are replying to (in this case PA Bear's answer.) | Re: Internet explorer cannot display webpage I've done these steps four times already and still nothing has changed with regards to IE browser. Keeps telling me "internet explorer cannot display webpage". I tried other web addresses as well and still the same thing. However I noticed a few things that I didn't earlier on which I'd just like to share with in case it may make a difference. I began 'disabling' AVG(free)anti-virus by right clicking its icon in the notification tray area(beside the clock) and this time also removing it from start up programs via Start>Run>(type)msconfig>startup tab>uncheck AVG box. Then I checked Security Centre and clicking under "malware" found that AVG is still on and scanning. Wasn't it supposed to be "off" and showing a red light considering I just disabled it. Also under the "firewall" the Norton firewall is still reported to be on although outdated. Even though outdated could it still affect these steps PA BEAR suggested below. If so please advice me on how to disable this outdated Norton firewall. I tried right-clicking its icon in the notification tray but no quit option like the AVG. Should I just uninstall the whole Norton package to make sure its firewall is out of the picture completely. What do you think? PA BEAR? BTW I really appreciate your time and patience. Thank you. | Re: Internet explorer cannot display webpage There has to be a bug in Vista Windows update KB938371. I'm getting the exact same error and when I restore to a point before that update, Internet Explorer starts working again. If I reinstall KB938371, the same error happens again. I'm running Symantec AntiVirus v 10.2 build 276, but any Microsoft Vista update should be compatible with any version of Symantec Antivirus. | Re: Internet explorer cannot display webpage OK, I believe it is KB944533 now, but your steps 1-5 are not working. You suggest if those steps don't work try uninstalling Symantec and running a full-removal tool. Updating Internet Explorer in the past has never required a full uninstall and reinstall of an end-users anti-virus program. This doesn't seem right and running without an anti-virus program in order to install IE updates should not be required. Is MicroSoft officially stating this is the only work-around for KB944533 causing the "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" error? | Re: Internet explorer cannot display webpage > ...You > suggest if those steps don't work try uninstalling Symantec and running a > full-removal tool. Whoa, pardner! In a reply to 'Fiji Flyer' (only), I recommended uninstalling any *Norton* (not Symantec) applications and then running the Norton removal tool (which does not work for Symantec Corporate Editions), and /only/ because he had chosen to replace Norton AntiVirus with AVG Anti-Virus. This is an example of why we always ask "Me, too!" posters in a thread (e.g., yourself) to begin a new thread about /their/ problem and specific machine configuration. > This doesn't seem right and running without an anti-virus program in order > to install IE updates should not be required. I agree with you, but you'll have to take this up with Symantec and other anti-virus suppliers whose applications interfere with the changes an update is making. And please note that my reply cautions the user not to do anything else online while the anti-virus application is disabled except download/install the update in question. > ...Is MicroSoft officially > stating this is the only work-around for KB944533 causing the "Internet > Explorer cannot display the webpage" error? | Re: Internet explorer inop & Anti-virus We've been having the same problem however we use Trend Micro PC-cillin. Completely stopping AV scanning on startup and running through removal of 2/13 updates and we're still no where. Going through your steps posted, and still no where. Guess we'll go the route of calling MS. However it's hard to say for certain which patch caused the issue (KB944533 seems likely but not assured). If anyone has any other ideas than the same old "run through this for 99% of the problems" I'd appreciate any ideas. "PA Bear [MS MVP]" wrote: > You should have posted this as a Reply To my post, FF.
