IE7 update and/or re-install makes Windows XP freeze

I am running IE7 beta 3 on Windows XP. When trying to install a recommended
upgrade, XP froze in the process of de-installing the previous version (i.e.
ended up in a loop). (After ca. 3 hours I manually shut off the computer.)

I then tried to manually un-install IE7 beta 3 (start > control panel [or
similar; I work with the German version] > software > un-install), which led
to the very same result (this time I gave it a chance overnight and shut the
machine off the next morning.)

Question: How do I get rid of the previous version? Or how can I make the
upgrade override the previous version?

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

TIA
