Slow deleting favorites in IE7

When we try to delete favorites from IE7 on one computer running VISTA it
takes a long time for each deletion! By a long time I'm talking minutes not
seconds. On another computer with the same operating system and very
similar hardware the same deletion only take a few seconds. Anyone have any
idea what's going on with the first computer? TIA!

Re: Slow deleting favorites in IE7

=> Does this behavior persist if you start IE7 in No Add-ons mode? To start
IE7 in No Add-ons mode:

1. Right-click on the blue IE desktop icon and select Start without Add-ons;

2. Start > (All) Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Internet Explorer
(No add-ons).

Troubleshooting and Internet Explorer’s (No Add-ons) Mode:

=> Does the problem persist if you Reset IE7 Settings (RIES)?

Re: Slow deleting favorites in IE7

PA Bear, thanks for the reply but neither of those suggestions worked. Two
things that we did discover while we were working on the problem was that
the problem doesn't manifest itself every time when we try to delete a
favorite. And, it also shows up when we try to move a favorite so it's not
just when we try to delete. Again, TIA for any help that you can give us.

Do a thorough check for malware, following all of the steps at one of these
Web pages.
Help with malware:
All MS-MVP Sites.

Unexplained computer behavior may be caused by deceptive software.

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?
For quite a few people it's by installing programs like Messenger Plus,
whose ads for malware don't identify the malware as such and try to convince
you that you owe it to the author. See also:

Don't ever do a "default" install of anything. Always choose Custom and see
what else is being carried along. Don't install any extras you're not sure
of.

Re: Slow deleting favorites in IE7

See Frank's reply. The behavior may be a sympton of a hijackware infection.

Otherwise, what applications are running on the problem machine that aren't
running on the other machine?

Re: Slow deleting favorites in IE7

Thank you both Frank and PA Bear! We had inadvertently allowed MyWebSearch
to be installed on her machine and that seemed to have been causing the
problem! We uninstalled that nasty and everything's working as it should.
We'll be running Ad-Aware and other anti-spyware regularly from now on to
try to avoid these problems. Thanks, again.

Re: Slow deleting favorites in IE7

MyWebSearch often brings along several unwanted "friends".

Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting your hijackthis log
to an appropriate forum.

Checking for/Help with Hijackware
http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm
http://aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm
http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?t=5878

http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/Malware_Defence.htm
http://defendingyourmachine2.blogspot.com/
http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/...moving_Malware

When all else fails, HijackThis v2.0.2
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware with
assistance from an expert. **Post your log to
http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=22,
http://castlecops.com/forum67.html,
http://forums.subratam.org/index.php?showforum=7,
http://aumha.net/viewforum.php?f=30, or other appropriate forums for expert
analysis, not here.**

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.
