| internet explorer has encountered a problem and needs to closeurlmon.dll error HELP!!! Hello, I work for a college campus. Many of our computers on campus are experiencing a problem with Internet Explorer 6 and 7. When opening various web pages, users get an error that Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. The file is urlmon.dll. I have tried many things to fix this including the following: To resolve this problem in Internet Explorer, follow these steps: 1. Quit all programs that are running. 2. Click Start, and then click Run. 3. Type: regsvr32 urlmon.dll and then click OK. 4. When you receive the "DllRegisterServer in urlmon.dll succeeded" message, click OK. If this does not resolve the problem, repeat steps 2 through 4 for each of the following files (in step 3, replace Urlmon.dll with each of the file names below): * Shdocvw.dll * Actxprxy.dll * Oleaut32.dll * Mshtml.dll * Browseui.dll * Shell32.dll Also, cleared out temp internet files, cookies and history. This does fix the problem for a short while, but then it comes back eventually. It might be days it might be minutes, but it comes back. My wife called me the other day from her work, and people at her work are also experiencing the same problems as the computers on our campus. They are running IE6 with latest updates. I have a lady here running IE6 with all updates who was experiencing the error. I tried the fix above with no success, so I updated her to IE7 and installed all updates only to have the error come again 5 minutes later. This is pissing me off really bad and I really don't want to have to reinstall IE for over 100 computers that are experiencing the problem. Any help would be appreciated!!!!!!!!!! |

Also see http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/200...-on-xpsp2.aspx IE crashing with errors in URLMON.DLL is usually only seen in computers running IE6. Do a thorough check for malware, following all of the steps at one of these Web pages. For quite a few people it's by installing programs like Messenger Plus, whose ads for malware don't identify the malware as such and try to convince you that you owe it to the author. Specifically, registering shdocvw.dll has caused an incompatibility with IE7 and mshtml.dll no longer has an entry point for DllRegisterServer (which may make the error message disconcerting for users.) The only reliable repair which seems to be left for IE7 is its Reset... command and when mentioning it I always issue the caveat about what will happen to a users AutoComplete data, especially saved passwords. ; ) FYI Robert Aldwinckle --- |
