| IE 7/Vista Unable to Open Link to WMV File For the most part, IE 7 running on my Vista PC is working fine. However, on occasion, it cannot/will not open a link that is a movie file ending in .wmv. The latest example was a link embedded in an email that I openned in OL 2007. When clinking on the link, I get the standar error about possible connection problems or site not available. The same email contained links to websites that worked fine. trying to copy/paste the link into the IE 7 address line still results in the error. I have checked all my security settings, I think. I even turned them off without any change. When I copy the email/links to my XP machine running IE 6, the .wmv file opens without a problem starting Media Player automatically. What do I have to change in IE 7/Vista to get it to act thesame as XP? TIA |

What happens if you copy the link and open it in WMP directly? Ctrl-u Check at the same time with WMP (File, Tools>, Options,... FileTypes) that WMP is designated to open that filetype. > > When I copy the email/links to my XP machine running IE 6, the .wmv file > opens without a problem starting Media Player automatically. | Re: IE 7/Vista Unable to Open Link to WMV File I find the only way I can get mp3 links on sites to play is by right clicking on the link and choosing save target as and putting it on my computer.. then I can virus scan and doubleclick the file and hear/view it like normal... not sure why it does it but this work-around seems to do the trick for me "Robert Aldwinckle" wrote: > "Don S." <DonS@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message > news:9A254506-F240-45DB-B605-76B92ECE768F@microsoft.com... > > For the most part, IE 7 running on my Vista PC is working fine. > > > > However, on occasion, it cannot/will not open a link that is a movie file > > ending in .wmv. Notice no Save Target as.. choice. Clicking on Copy Hyperlink and then pasting it into the IE 7 address bar, results in the error I have been getting saying IE7 cannot display the page. Clicking on Open Hyperlink does the same thing. > > "Robert Aldwinckle" wrote: > > > "Don S." <DonS@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message > > news:9A254506-F240-45DB-B605-76B92ECE768F@microsoft.com... > > > For the most part, IE 7 running on my Vista PC is working fine. > > > > > > However, on occasion, it cannot/will not open a link that is a movie file > > > ending in .wmv. I had not tried this before. I still don't know why IE 7 has to work differently than IE 6 in this regards. Thanks to both of you for your help. However, are you saying that there is no File menu in Vista's WMP? E.g. in WMP: press Alt-F,T,O,Ctrl-Backtab x3 FWIW instead of using Alt-F to start that sequence it looks as if I could also right-click in the Toolbar and take the same path using mouse clicks through the menu and Options dialog. >> > When I copy the email/links to my XP machine running IE 6, the .wmv file >> > opens without a problem starting Media Player automatically. >> >> >> Which says nothing about the filetypes on your Vista machine. > I am not sure what you are saying here, but WMP is the default > program for wmv files on both PCs. Do you have anything else installed which might be trying to open multi-media files? Then those programs could have taken over the filetype associations for some of the ones that WMP usually handles. Also those programs could be interfering with WMP's handling of the ones that it still thinks it does handle.
