| Re: internet explorer- internet options wont work!!!! why? Hi, It's possible that file in the \System32 folder "inetcpl.cpl" has become corrupted. You might try the following procedure to get a fresh copy of that file placed back into the \System32 folder. The following assumes you are using Windows XP, if you are uncomfortable about proceeding with this troubleshooting step ask a friend that is knowledgeable with computers to attempt it for you:) 1. Using Windows Explorer, navigate to the following folder: C:\WINDOWS\System32 2. Inside the \System32 folder you will find a file named "inetcpl.cpl", right-click on that file and rename it to something like "inetcpl.old". Note: You will be alerted about changing the name of this file, just click OK. 3. Wait a few seconds and then click on View||Refresh and you should see that WFP(Windows File Protection) has moved a fresh copy of "inetcpl.cpl" from the "C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache" folder back into the \System32 folder to replace the one you renamed. Once WFP(Windows File Protection) moves a fresh copy of "inetcpl.cpl" into the \System32 folder, you can then delete the file you renamed to "inetcpl.old". Good luck, Donald Anadell "emmacmarsh" <emmacmarsh@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:5B55E57E-64AE-442B-9088-76C99AAFBC28@microsoft.com... > every time i try to get the internet options up to delete my history etc > it > pops up for one second then goes again and i cant access it through > control > panel either, does anyone know how to help me plz? will be very grateful. > thanks |

Open Regedit. Find the value NoBrowserOptions and remove every instance of it. It is most likely (but not necessarily) to be here: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Inte rnet Explorer\Restrictions You might try this from Mike Burgess first if you use SpyBot: 'Did you by chance run SpyBot's Immunize feature? If so, you can unlock by unchecking the option to "Protect IE Control Panel". What you've described sounds like the proper icon for that file to me. >like a unfinished file maybe? Is it possible that you have some third party Security software installed that has a feature set to block the Internet Options, such as Spybot? You might also what to do a thurough check of your machine for malware that might be causing this issue. Good luck, Donald Andell |

| Re: internet explorer- internet options wont work!!!! why? I have the same problem as emmacmarsh. I found a partial solution on the internet. Its a tedious workaround at best, but certainly not a cure. According to the internet advice, I found a working copy of inetcpl.cpl (a 350KB file) on another computer of mine that has a working internet options (by the way, all of my machines are configured the same way, but this is the only machine that has this problem... admittedly i have installed more software on this machine than the others). Anyway, the current copy of inetcpl.cpl is 1789KB. I delete that file and paste in the new file, and suddenly I have access to my internet options. And I continue to have access, but the file replacement triggers an automatic update (and its the same auto update everytime) that replaces the working file with the 1789KB file that doesnt work. This is what is so tedious. I even emailed Microsoft but got no reply. I hope that some MS engineer looks at my post and can offer a solution once and for all. Other than this problem, my WinXP is working great. This is the only reason that I feel like reinstalling my OS, and I dislike that process a great deal. Please help! Is there a better location to post? http://support.microsoft.com/gp/contactbug It will get read by a human being and forwarded to the proper programming team. You are not likely to get an answer unless they want more information. The inetcpl.cpl you mention does not come alone but with an update. Without the rest of the update Windows is apt to reject the 2007.12.06 version. I'm not sure what update it came with, but make sure your WinXP has all the proper critical updates from Windows Update. I recommend installing them with all security programs except Windows Firewall turned off. -- Frank Saunders MS-MVP IE,OE/WM www.fjsmjs.com Do not reply with email |

| Re: internet explorer- internet options wont work!!!! why? Thanks for your response, Frank. Interestingly, the 350KB copy that works actually also resides in my machine, but in a different location.... c:windows\ie7. However, in c:windows\system32 is where the nonworking copy resides. They coexist; what a paradox?! The only other software that I am running that can affect new software installs is McAfee Viruscan, but that is running on all my other machines as well (7 aside from this one). But since I am expecting an auto update from Microsoft that I have scheduled for 3AM, I have disabled the access control of McAfee that can stop some software installs dead in their track. I doubt this will help. I look forward to the solution for this problem. Many other people are experiencing this issue. Simply google "inetcpl.cpl 350KB" and you can see there posts. Thank you. | Re: internet explorer- internet options wont work!!!! why? Hey Frank and everybody. Rather than wait for the MS Autoupdate, I triggered it manually. The update that triggers the replacement of the 350KB working inetcpl.cpl with the 1789KB nonworking copy of inetcpl.cpl is.... Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP (KB944533). ..... somebody please help. Thank you all for looking. | Re: internet explorer- internet options wont work!!!! why? Frank, Problem solved once and for all, by calling MS and using their techniques for reinstalling ie7. Frank, I visited the link you provided... http://support.microsoft.com/gp/contactbug .. I called Microsoft with a number I got from that website... Report a Microsoft Product Bug If you think you have found a bug in a Microsoft product, contact our Microsoft Product Support Services department. (800) MICROSOFT (642-7676) .... Microsoft actually listened to my concerns, told me that the problem is known and that about March 15th an update solution will be available, but at the same time escalated my case to the ie7 team. The ie7 team support member listened and immediately guessed that somehow my ie7 was corrupted. He said that when I changed the file and got options to work that the MS update that followed would replace that file and whatever was corrupt in my ie7 was not compatible with the new inetcpl.cpl file. He first had me enter cmd at the run box. Then he had me run "regsvr32 inetcpl.cpl". I got an error "inetcpl.cpl was loaded, but the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found. inetcpl.cpl does not appear to be a .DLL or .OCX file." The ie7 tech said that apparently ie7 doesnt recognize the inetcpl.cpl to be a valid file. He said I need to reinstall ie7, but using microsoft tools as opposed to using add and delete programs. He had me go surf to "goie7.notlong.com" by typing only that into my address bar of my ie7 browser. Then he told me to install the tool which uninstalled ie7. I now had ie6 and he asked me to test my ie options. The options window opened fine. The he told me to run "msconfig", and from the general tab, he told me to uncheck load startup items. The at the services tab he had me check hide all microsoft services, hit apply, and then manually uncheck all third party services, and click OK. Next he had me restart my computer. After the restart, the ie7 tech directed me to enter "getmeie7.notlong.com" in my browsers address bar. This installed a fresh copy of ie7. Then I tested ie options and sure enough it worked. Then I undid all the msconfig changes and restarted all third party services. Then I ran the Microsoft updates and fully updated my os, WinXP pro. Problem solved. They are going to call me on March 5th as a follow up. But with a fully updated OS, I doubt things are going to fail now. Thanks for all your help, and I hope this helps other people as well. BTW, this posting was difficult for me to find. I wish we could make this posting easier to find, but I do not how to do that. Can you help? I tried searches like internet options wont open and I keep getting no search results. Anyway, good luck to all, hope this helped.
