| Norton Antivirus Auto Protect is degrading IE7 performance I am running IE 7, XP Professional 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2 and <sigh> Norton AntiVirus ver.10.0.0.109 (as part of System Works). In System Works, I hve One Button Checkup; Norton Utilities; Password Manager and Norton AntiVirus services enabled. As far as I know all software is absolutely up to date with updates and patches. The problem is that with Norton Auto Protect enabled, IE7 is incredibly slow to load pages and navigate backward/forward, etc. I have tested the exact same web searches with Netscape Navigator 9 and they are speedy as usual, so it's not the network. I could try to explain how/when this problem started, but it involved failed Restore Point and too much other excitement to document. I have disabled virus scanning of email, have disable phishing and have run virus scans etc. Any suggestions <other than to dump Norton> as to what I should try now? | Re: Norton Antivirus Auto Protect is degrading IE7 performance You don't have a problem. What you are experiencing is the effect of Norton software on your computer. I probably sound like a Norton-basher, but Norton-branded software is well-known for degrading a computer's performance (and that's just one of the deleterious effects of Norton-branded software has on a computer.) No need to take my word for it. Uninstall all your Norton software -- that's a problem unto itself since Norton software can be tough to uninstall - and you'll see the difference. Now, to be fair, it's an unfortunate fact of life that we need to have protective software to surf the web, and any kind of protective software will slow down a computer. Nonetheless, Norton software is particularly egregious. Okay, I've made my point so no more about Norton. There may be other things going on with your computer but we can't even guess at what that might be if all you can say about it is "too much other excitement to document". Farshteist? | Re: Norton Antivirus Auto Protect is degrading IE7 performance 1. Uninstall all Norton software via Add/Remove Programs. 2. Enable the Windows Firewall. 3. Run this removal tool: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...05033108162039 4. Immediately install the 30-day free trial version of, e.g., NOD32* or KAV7** 5. Manually update your new anti-virus application then run a full system scan. Do your problems persist now? | RE: Norton Antivirus Auto Protect is degrading IE7 performance Many thanks to PA Bear and Leonard Grey for their sage advice. I will develop a strategy to replace all installed Norton (though I do like their Password vault software). In the meantime, I tried a process that I had used about 2 operating systems ago... I un-registered and re-registered Norton Auto-Protect through the use of the Norton <path> \navapsvc.exe /unregserver ; <path> \navapsvc.exe" /service. Then use the Noron software to enable auto-protect and startup auto-protect with Windows. Re-boot and -- tada -- a miracle, IE works again. thanks again "Shaggy Dog" wrote: > I am running IE 7, XP Professional 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2 and <sigh> Norton > AntiVirus ver.10.0.0.109 (as part of System Works). | Re: Norton Antivirus Auto Protect is degrading IE7 performance Glad to help. You'll find plenty of outstanding password-protection programs on the web. Just as an example: I am currently using KeePass, which is both free and open source, but there are plenty of similar programs that you might prefer. --- Leonard Grey Errare humanum est Shaggy Dog wrote: > Many thanks to PA Bear and Leonard Grey for their sage advice. | Re: Norton Antivirus Auto Protect is degrading IE7 performance I suggested temporarily replacing all Norton applications with something else to illustrate how intrusive they are (and what a memory hog NAV is). Using your Product ID, you could then uninstall the replacement software and reinstall the Norton applications as desired. Good luck. -- ~PA Bear Shaggy Dog wrote: > Many thanks to PA Bear and Leonard Grey for their sage advice. | Re: Norton Antivirus Auto Protect is degrading IE7 performance PA, you are absolutely right. Even using the Symantec uninstall program, you can still find remnants of Norton products (with a registry searcher). The only companies and programs that have made me more crazed than Symantec are (an ISP that has three letters) and (media suites that end in "o"). I can see the resource issue with all these products, and they all leave annoying little "drecks" when I think they have been removed. Thank goodness for assistance from folks like you. | Re: Norton Antivirus Auto Protect is degrading IE7 performance If you again experience a slow down due to Norton, I would recommend AVG anti virus. It's compact, not at all a resource hog, and works very well. If all you want is AV, there is even a free version that works as well. "Shaggy Dog" wrote: > PA, you are absolutely right.
