"Open Home Page" and "Start Without Add-ons"

Operative Systen WinsowsXP-Pro SP2.
IE 6 or IE 7
Normally you get the choises "Open Home Page" and "Start Without Add-ons"
when you right click on the Internet Explorer icon on the desktop.
On 3 different PC's I have experienced that these choices disappears. It
means that when you try starting Internet Explorer from the desktopicon you
get a new shortcut to Internet Explorer on the desktop.
I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling IE without solving the problem.
How can the problem be solved?

Re: "Open Home Page" and "Start Without Add-ons"

Hi,
First go to Display properties> Desktop> Customize to check IE under Desktop
icons. That should place the proper IE icon on the desktop- the one which
gives you options such as "Start without add-ons" and Properties> Internet
Options. If that option is already checked, you should uncheck it, restart
the computer, recheck it.

Then, do you move the mouse when double-clicking? That would create a copy
of the icon. I do that, so I've set the middle mouse button (wheel) to
double-click.

Hope this helps,
Don

What do you see when you right-click on it?

That would happen if the right-click menu showed Create Shortcut
as the default action (e.g. if that item would be bolded.)

> I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling IE without solving the problem.
> How can the problem be solved?

That should have replaced the shortcut (twice.)
So after you uninstalled IE7 what did right-click show you with IE6?
The IE7 install may just preserve your IE6 settings?
Instead of uninstalling you could use IE7's RIES command.
That would discard any non-standard settings due to IE6
(and all other personal preferences and data too.)

Why not create and use a different shortcut which does what you want?

Re: "Open Home Page" and "Start Without Add-ons"

I have this exact same problem.

When I right-click IE on the desktop, I can only see "Create Shortcut", "Delete", "Rename" and "Properties".
It appears that "Open Home Page" and "Start Without Add-Ons" have disappeared.

I have tried the Explorer/Desktop/HideIcons registry fix but that doesn't seem to solve this problem, it only turns the icon on or off.

I have also noticed that, as I know, some of my add-ons add more menu items to "Tools...", and they have disappeared too. If I try to go through Tools > Manage add-ons, it doesn't open up anything, but through Tools > Options > Settings it does.

I was wondering if anyone knew how to solve this or if I should just try doing a good reinstall of IE7.

This problem also happened with IE6 and the problem persisted even after I install IE7. (Installing Service Pack 3, for some strange reason, does not install IE7...)

Thanks for the help!

Robert

The latest suggestions for this symptom involve a registry hack...

"double click" desktop icon registry

Did you try using the Reset command (aka RIES)?

Talking Re: "Open Home Page" and "Start Without Add-ons"

:(

Sorry for not quoting the original, I thought that writing "I have the exact same problem" would be sufficient.

Thank you SOOOOOOO MUCH for posting the solution!!! I have tried messing around with my computer and the registry trying to get it to work and now it does :D:D:D

Personally I consider all forums that are spidered by Google are still open, and as the solution hadn't been posted here, I thought it needed completing. (Actually, I didn't even look at the dates, I just came straight in and hoped that someone considerate enough would reply, which they did)

Thank you so much for the solution, I can't stress that enough.

Service Pack 3 included several security updates and fixes, it puzzles me why Microsoft did not include IE7, a massive security fix, into SP3. There is the whole issue of "do you want to install IE7?", and the anti-trust laws, but still. Unless they don't want *everyone* to move to IE7, because then a lot of exploits and vulnerabilities won't work anymore, and the "hackers" will start focusing on IE7 more instead...

But anyway, thank you, Robert.
If I could do something, I would, but I can't... all I can do is hope you all the best in the future :D

Thank you!

Robert
