| Re: hey i got a virus and i need help Download and run the virus /spyware cleaners offered free by companies. McAfee has STINGER, AVAST has CLEANER, Norton has cleaners too. After you download, boot into safe mode and run the scans. http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-virus-cleaner.html http://download.nai.com/products/mca...rt/stinger.exe "zak_hyman********.com" <zak_hyman********.com@discussions.microsoft.com > wrote in message news:731A0CCF-06BB-4C49-9DA4-3197AB2DA182@microsoft.com... |i got a virus that starts up when i start ie it comes up on my startup icons | and it says system is running slow and when i click on it it goes to a | website thats says i need to download a virus cleaner and when i do norton | stops it saying it was a virus but norton wont get rid of it wat do i do | please help me out. |

| Re: hey i got a virus and i need help Today's viruses and malicious software can be very hard to detect, and even harder to remove. If you suspect your computer is infected, follow these steps: 1) Update your Norton software and scan your computer. With luck, this will detect and remove the problem. 2) If the scan doesn't produce results, contact the Symantec technical support. They will help you to remove an infection that their software did not detrect. 3) Scan your system with /several/ of the better online scanners (Kaspersky, Eset, Trend Micro, Panda, Sophos etc.) 4) Submit a HiJack This log to one of the expert web sites that analyze these logs. To find HiJack this, look here: http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/programs.php "So how did I get infected in the first place?" http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php?showtopic=60955 --- Leonard Grey Errare humanum est zak_hyman********.com wrote: > i got a virus that starts up when i start ie it comes up on my startup icons > and it says system is running slow and when i click on it it goes to a > website thats says i need to download a virus cleaner and when i do norton > stops it saying it was a virus but norton wont get rid of it wat do i do > please help me out. |

You'd be well advised to steer away from on-line scanners! They are the most unsafe if the virus infection has spread, because by the time you've started your infected Windows and connected to the Internet via this infected code base, and start to look for scanning sites through infected DNS, you are almost certain to have the malware perfectly positioned to overrule your attempts to clean it. What happens if active malware is found? Don't expect that the on-line scanner will do anything about it. They are just marketing tools for selling you their products. Quite often, malware removal on the NT based OS (Win 2K and XP) is far from easy. Sometimes a resident av can deal with it in Safe Mode, but other times a alternate OS method (formal scanning)is required using something like a Bart CD. Or maybe the drive can be pulled and scanned on a diferent machine. Other reasons to stay away from on'line scanners are: 1. You have to use IE on very low security setting - ActiveX is required. 2. Many users will lower security in the Internet Zone to use the service and then forget to set the Internet Zone back to highest possible security - which is the only way that IE should be set. Multi-AV is safer, because you don't have to be online to use it, and it can be used in Safe Mode. Download David H. Lipman's MULTI_AV.EXE from the URL -- http://www.pctipp.ch/downloads/dl/35905.asp To use this utility, perform the following... Execute; Multi_AV.exe { Note: You must use the default folder C:\AV-CLS } Choose; Unzip Choose; Close Execute; C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT { or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS } NOTE: You may have to disable your software FireWall or allow WGET.EXE to go through your FireWall to allow it to download the needed AV vendor related files. C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT -- { or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS} This will bring up the initial menu of choices and should be executed in Normal Mode. This way all the components can be downloaded from each AV vendor's web site. The choices are; Sophos, Trend, McAfee, Kaspersky, Exit this menu and Reboot the PC. You can choose to go to each menu item and just download the needed files or you can download the files and perform a scan in Normal Mode. Once you have downloaded the files needed for each scanner you want to use, you should reboot the PC into Safe Mode [F8 key during boot] and re-run the menu again and choose which scanner you want to run in Safe Mode. It is suggested to run the scanners in both Safe Mode and Normal Mode. When the menu is displayed hitting 'H' or 'h' will bring up a more comprehensive PDF help file. http://www.ik-cs.com/multi-av.htm Additional Instructions: http://pcdid.com/Multi_AV.htm Vista users please note: http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Multi-AV It's safer still if you can avoid running any code from the infected system at all, and that can be done by working from Bart CDR boot. But that means having a clean system to build the Bart disk, and more to the point, a fair bit of effort and technical fiddling. Good luck :) |
