| If I type too fast: "<website> is currently unavailable" Hello all, I wanted to report a bug. When I start IE7 and immediately go to the adressbar and type the name of a website (existing or non-existing) and press enter before IE7 is ready. I do get a message stating that the website is currently unavailable: "'http://www.microsoft.com/' is currently unavailable." (Caption: Address bar). (Original Dutch message: "'http://www.microsoft.com/' is momenteel niet beschikbaar." and the Dutch caption is called "Adresbalk".) To reproduce this (the most easy way), first copy the text "www.microsoft.com" to your clipboard. Close every instance of Internet Explorer. Start your virus-scanner to scan your harddrive (this slows down the starting of IE7, which gives you a little bit more time). Start IE7, immediately click on the address bar, paste the text in the address bar and press Enter. You have to do this WHILE IE7 is displaying that it is "Connecting..." ("Verbinging maken..." in Dutch). Then the message will appear. After you press OK, the address bar will be overwritten with your start page, so you have to type the name again... Immediately thereafter, the website will work as normal. It's just really annoying loosing the text you've already typed (or part of the text...). I hope a Microsoft Engineer could solve this. Thank you kindly in advance. With kind regards, Patrick Luja ---------------- This post is a suggestion for Microsoft, and Microsoft responds to the suggestions with the most votes. | Re: If I type too fast: "<website> is currently unavailable" No MS engineers here. Windows version? => Does this behavior persist if you start IE7 in No Add-ons mode? To start IE7 in No Add-ons mode: 1. Right-click on the blue IE desktop icon and select Start without Add-ons; 2. Start > (All) Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Internet Explorer (No add-ons). | Re: If I type too fast: "<website> is currently unavailable" Hello all, PA Bear, thank you kindly for your reaction. I'm a first-timer on this newsgroup. I've tried your suggesting of starting it without add-ons, but the behaviour is still the same. This behaviour was already present in the beta versions (at least from beta 3), and it was in all versions up until now... Also (partly) resetting IE didn't help. There will be a good reason (on source-code-level) to first initialize IE7, and then listen to the users' input. But it is still a bit annoying when (part of) your input is wiped... My windows version is 5.1 build 2600.xpsp_sp2_gdr.070227-2254. It's a Dutch version of Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 2. PA Bear, thank you kindly for your effort. | Re: If I type too fast: "<website> is currently unavailable" I'm suprised No Add-ons mode didn't help. The more Add-ons you have, the slower it will take an IE7 window (or tab in that window) to load. It's possible that you have a horked (dirty; bad; flawed) install of IE7, for whatever reason. I suggest that you... 1. Uninstall IE7 (which automatically returns you to IE6) exactly per http://www.ie-vista.com/kbase2.html 2a. Uninstall all toolbars and third-party Windows Themes (including Window Blinds). 2b. Disable all Norton Add-ons, if applicable. 3. Reinstall IE7 exactly per http://www.ie-vista.com/known_issues.html#pre-install, and using http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/default.mspx as the installation source, not Automatic/Windows Update. 4. IMMEDIATELY go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and install any critical updates offered. If "Root Certificates" update is listed in the Optional category, you might install it, too, to take full advantage of IE7's additional security. | Re: If I type too fast: "<website> is currently unavailable" Dear PA Bear, I already uninstalled IE7 two times and reinstalled the newest version after that, but it didn't help. I don't have any extra toolbars installed nor any themes, I do however have a few other add-ons installed like Shockwave Player, Java (from Sun), and the rest is from Microsoft. I can type quite fast, so maybe I'm too quick for IE7. I always want to have the latest version of something, so I run Microsoft Update at least once a week. I just think that IE7 needs time to initialize, but that they forgot to disable the address bar between the time the user interface shows and the time IE7 has initialized. (Or another option would be to delay my request until after the initialization.) Thank you kindly, PA Bear.
