IE7 Cannot reinstall

Hi,

Running WinXPHome with SP2. I've been having problems with IE7, links and
other things, so I uninstalled IE7 at add/remove. This reverted me back to
IE6. I do wish to use IE7 so I downloaded the latest IE7. Now when
clicking the install icon, it goes all the way through the setup phase,
installing IE7. After that is completed, this popup appears:

"Setup could not verify the integrity of the files needed for installation.
Make sure the Cryptographic Service is running."

I've checked Services.msc numerous times and when viewing C-S, it is set to
automatic and is started (running). I've downloaded IE7 several times and
always the same answer. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Re: IE7 Cannot reinstall

I am spending some time with this and when solution is found, will post
back. :) It's not going too smooth though.

When arriving at that URL, then down to Method 4, then using KB822798,
(where my problem lies) so far nothing has helped. Here are some examples
of what is happening:

Method 1 - Rename the Edb.log file. Using Start, Run, CMD, and typing - ren
%systemroot%\system32\catroot2\Edb.log *.tst

Response: The process cannot access the file because it is being used by
another process. [I'm not running anything else so don't know how to
resolve that issue].

Method 2 - Set Cryptographic Services to automatic. When viewing Crypto
services, it is set to started; automatic, logged on Local System.

Method 3 - Rename the Catroot2 folder.

1. Start, Run, CMD. At the command prompt, type the following commands,

net stop cryptsvc
ren %systemroot%\System32\Catroot2
oldcatroot2
net start cryptsvc
exit

Response: 'net' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.

2. Remove all tmp *.cat files from sys32 catroot... folder. [OK, but no
temps found].

Method 4: Reregister DLL files associated with Crypto Svcs:

regsvr32 /u softpub.dll
regsvr32 /u wintrust.dll
regsvr32 /u initpki.dll
regsvr32 /u dssenh.dll
regsvr32 /u rsaenh.dll
regsvr32 /u gpkcsp.dll
regsvr32 /u sccbase.dll
regsvr32 /u slbcsp.dll
regsvr32 /u mssip32.dll
regsvr32 /u cryptdlg.dll

[All the above DLLs succeeded in registering].

Then, run CMD, and at prompt, enter those same DLLs and click ENTER after
each one.

Response: 'regsvr32' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.

[I attempt to reinstall IE7 after each method steps are completed though
they aren't helping too much at the moment. Will keep trying. Later...]

Re: IE7 Cannot reinstall

Required reading IMHO before installing IE7:

Sandi's Installation Tips <= FOLLOW THESE TIPS TO THE LETTER!
http://www.ie-vista.com/known_issues.html#pre-install

[And I strongly recommend using
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/dow.../getitnow.mspx as the
installation source, not Automatic/Windows Update. Make *certain* that you
check in at Windows Update immediately after installing IE7 and install any
critical updates offered. If Optional Updates category offers Root
Certificates update, I recommend installing it to take full advantage of
IE7's additional security.]

Re: IE7 Cannot reinstall

Bear, I've had IE7 installed for a long time. Recently it began giving me
problems and based on advise from other forum, I uninstalled IE7, reverting
back to IE6. Now after downloading IE7 and trying to reinstall, I get the
Crypto Svcs snafu. I attempted earlier today to install it via safe mode
and of course got the same popup about Crypto. I will go thru all those
items you post and see if I can resolve. Thanks up front!

YW. To keep track of things, it helps immensely if you include all of
previous message(s) in your replies to the newsgroup. Thank you.

Re: IE7 Cannot reinstall

Bear, does it matter that Sandi's info is Vista ie install? The other
website you list for obtaining and installing IE7 is where I downloaded it
from. I would say that it's not really Cryptographic Services hindering the
install, the popup merely wanted me to check and make sure it's running.
It's the first part of the popup that seems to apply - that it can't verify
the integrity of files needed for installation. So what is the mechanism of
the OS that verifies installation files? I have run SFC /scannow and
nothing at all popped up. So files appear to be intact. Regards

That page is for WinXP SP2 and Win2K3. IE7 can't be reinstalled on Vista
since it's already there and can't be removed.

Re: IE7 Cannot reinstall

Frank - thanks, though I wasn't questioning that, I had only noted that the
topic subject on this Sandi's information referred to VISTA rather than XP.
So I was curious if the input data pertained to XP. So with your input, I
now know that it pertains to XP. Regards
