Internet Connecting without me

I am running I.E. version 6, SP1, on Windows 2000 pro.

Recently, as I leave my pc on throughout most of the day, and sometimes
throughout the night, my computer will decide to connect to the internet
(dial-up) on it's own. It now seems to be a daily occurrence. The PC will
take it upon itself and log-on to the internet where it stays connected
throughout the entire day. I have gone through as many settings as I can
think of, but nothing seems to be set incorrectly or unusual, in fact I
don't even know where to begin as to what program is really causing this,
but my computer connects to the internet without anyone's activation.

Can someone help?

Thanks in advance,

Vince

"Unexplained computer behavior may be caused by deceptive software"

Since malware can be very hard to detect you typically need to scan your
system for malicious software with /several/ of the better online
scanners (Kaspersky, Eset, Trend Micro, Panda, Sophos, Symantec etc.)

If you still can't determine what type(s) of infection you have, submit
a HiJack This log to one of the expert web sites that analyze these logs.

Check your Automatic Updates settings?
E.g. Run... (press Win-R and enter:)

control wuaucpl.cpl

Hint: the default is to check for updates at 3:00 AM local time... ; }

Instead of just hanging up your modem you might like to get into the habit
of also setting Work Offline. OE makes this really easy, since every time
you use it to set Work Offline it prompts you to see if you also want to hang up
the modem.

Do you have a hangup for idle timeout specified?
If it is not working it means that some application is polling
periodically more frequently than you have set your idle timeout value.
The only alternative then is to either modify the application's polling interval
or lower your idle timeout value accordingly.
