IE7 Freezes

I've recently ran into a problem with IE7. It freezes up after awhile, at
first I thought it was a bad connection but that wasn't the case. I've ran
several spyware, and anti virus scans and have found nothing. After I restart
my computer, and open IE everything works fine for awhile and then IE7
freezes. I close out the window and start the program again and nothings
loads, unless I restart my computer. I've cleared my cookies and temp.
internet files and nothing works. I have plenty of memory and disk space, and
the problem occured a week ago and won't go away. Is there anything anyone
could suggest?

Re: IE7 Freezes

Hi,
Windows XP or Vista?
Did you install or update a third-party security (or other) program about
the time the problem started?

Re: IE7 Freezes

I have XP and did not change anything. Just downloaded the update for IE
when notified it was available.

RE: IE7 Freezes

I have the same problem but it is daily. Sometimes as soon as I start IE7
but mostly if I am in the middle of something. It freezes then I get the
program not responding box. If I try to click the report button it says I
have to be connected to the internet which I technically am, it just won't
let me send the error report.

Re: IE7 Freezes

Hi,
You should have started your own topic, but since you're here ;-)

I haven't heard of a troublesome update this month, but you could try
uninstalling the latest update(s) from Control Panel> Add or remove
programs. Check the "Show updates" box.

Then see my last reply to joeh158.

Also, you may have an incompatible browser add-on.
See: http://www.enhanceie.com/ie/troubleshoot.asp
for troubleshooting information.

Hope this helps,
Don

Re: IE7 Freezes

Hi,
Try the Reset button in Internet Options> Advanced. Note that this will
delete stored (autocomplete) passwords. Do you have those recorded
elsewhere? This will also disable all add-ons. Leave them disabled for a
while to see if the problem is resolved. If it is, re-enable add-ons
individually until the problem returns.
See: http://www.enhanceie.com/ie/troubleshoot.asp
for troubleshooting information.

The troublesome program may not show up as an add-on. Disable other
security, privacy, ad-blocking, appearance tweaking programs to see if one
of them is causing the problem. Any program that interacts with Internet
Explorer could be causing this. The connection with IE may not be obvious,
such as Google Desktop.

A firewall or security suite could be causing this problem. Be sure to turn
on
the Windows Firewall from Control Panel> Windows Firewall before disabling a
third-party firewall or security suite during testing.

This could be a malware problem.
See these sites for help, including the posting of a HijackThis log to one
of the forums where HJT logs are analyzed:

Look for an "Important- Read this first" type message so that protocol is
followed and the process of analyzing the log works as designed.

I know of three causes for the vast majority of such problems:
1. Incompatible add-ons: What if you right click the IE icon on the desktop
and choose Start Without Add-ons?
Or go to Start | All Programs | Accessories | System Tools | Internet
Explorer (No Add-ons).

2. Tools | Internet Options | Advanced
Scroll to the bottom and click Reset Internet Explorer Settings. See this
article first:
How to use Reset Internet Explorer Settings (RIES):
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737

3. Malware already installed on the computer: Help with malware
All MS-MVP Sites.

http://aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm
http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/...moving_Malware

http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/Malware_Defence.htm

Unexplained computer behavior may be caused by deceptive software.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/827315

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?
For quite a few people it's by installing programs like Messenger Plus,
whose ads for
malware don't identify the malware as such and try to convince you that you
owe it to the author. See also:
http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=27971
Don't ever do a "default" install of anything. Always choose Custom and see
what else is being carried along. Don't install any extras you're not sure
of.
