| IE7 misssing security package?? IE7 cannot load secure pages - when you run the diagnostics and then look at the log, the diagnostic reports that IE cannot do http (but it can) and that it cannot do ftp (but it can) and reports the following errors when testing https: warn HTTPS: Error -2146893051 connecting to www.microsoft.com: The requested security package does not exist warn HTTPS: Error -2146893051 connecting to www.passport.net: The requested security package does not exist I'm tired of dealing with this - I ran the applet that was supposed to keep IE7 from installing on Windows Update but it installed anyway. Windows firewall is off. Netscape and Firefox work just fine for all functions including https. Everything was working perfectly and then IE7 installed and https is suddenly not working. BTW, this prob prevents me from connecting properly to Windows Update as well. Great situation to be in..... |

| Re: IE7 misssing security package?? 1. Does this behavior persist if you start IE7 in No Add-ons mode? To start IE7 in No Add-ons mode: Right-click on the blue IE desktop icon and select Start without Add-ons; or Start > (All) Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Internet Explorer (No add-ons). If you uninstall (a) IE7 (which automatically returns you to IE6), (b) all toolbars and (c) all third-party Windows Themes (including Window Blinds) and don't reinstall IE7, does this behavior persist? | Re: IE7 misssing security package?? In the interval, I uninstalled IE7 and went back to IE6, so I won't be able to try your first 2 questions until IE7 installs itself again. Starting with #3: I did *not* uninstall any 3rd party tools or themes (such as google toolbar which still works) and UNinstalling IE7 immediately restored the https service that I expect (I have to work all day in a secure environment - we are ecommerce developers) |

| Re: IE7 misssing security package?? OK, it turns out that I did not have to wait for IE7 to be installed. I rebooted for an unrelated reason and now IE6 is doing the same thing. (except I cannot run diagnostics because the new redirect says "To attempt fixing network connectivity problems, click Tools, and then click "Diagnose Connection Problems..." " ....but there is no such selection from the Tools menu. I did then disable all add-ons however this did not remedy the problem. Doing a reset of the browser as suggested in step 2 does not remedy the problem either. FYI, I noticed that in HELP | ABOUT cipher strngth is shown at 0-bit (I hope this means the connection could not be made and not that IE is requiring a client cert - we have our secures servers set NOT to require a client cert - could I have lost my root cert??? | Re: IE7 misssing security package?? I have no idea how you ended up in this predicament (possibly caused by hijackware) but here's how to fix it: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315341/ -- ~PA Bear Robinson wrote: > OK, it turns out that I did not have to wait for IE7 to be installed.
