IE7 security problem

Well I *think* it's an IE7 security problem -

Have 3 systems - all XP Pro SP2 IE7 connected in a LAN workgroup. When I try
to access the network shares using the NEWEST system - when the folder first
opens it displays for a second, then blanks and it takes almost a minute
before it displays again. During this time, task manager says there's about
87% network usage. After the first time, all is well and access and
transfers are fast. If I try going FROM the oldest systems to each other OR
to the new system - all is fine. Problem only happens when using the newest
system. All use onboard LAN 100mps - all have latest drivers.

I've googled everything I can find on this - I've deleted the key that scans
scheduled tasks, I've disabled Active X checks on the LAN, I've reduced
every security setting I can think of on the Local Intranet - all with no
luck. No firewall software in use. No spyware or virus present. I use AVG
anti virus and it makes no difference if I have file scanning on or off

It appears that *something* is scanning all the files in the share the first
time it is accessed from the new system.

I've run out of things to try - has anyone run into this before? I'm
positive it's some dumb security setting that I missed but I can't find out
which.

REALLY appreciate any help!

Thanx,

Vic Baron

Re: IE7 security problem

Hi Vic,

I assume that you are talking about your Network places or Workgroup
Computers or Mapped Network drives?

Any removable devices (even network) require an initialization handshake to
extablished that they are connected.

If you power down one of your 'puters on your network and then reboot, you
will find that accessing shared folders on that 'puter from other 'puters
will be slow as that client establishes a connection and caches file and
folder information.

I have a 250GB plug and play hard drive.. more like plug, wait along time,
then play.

Regards.

Re: IE7 security problem

Took a while but it turns out the AVG Resident Shield decided that it would
treat the network shares as unknown and scan every file before displaying
the list.

Disabled the Resident Shield and network access is back to normal.

Since AVG has been around a while and has had no major problems, I'll have
to dig deeper and find out what's causing the problem but for now, it's a
temporary fix and I doubt it has anything to do with IE7 security settings
as I first thought.

Since it happened in both Vista & XP (dual boot) I am assuming a driver
conflict.

Vic
