Instant Search Crashes IE7 on 3rd Character

I have one machine (a laptop) where when trying to use Instant Search in IE7,
the 3rd character freezes IE7 and I must force it to end using CTL ALT DEL. I
can do successful searches up to 2 characters. Running XP-PRO-SP2. I've tried
to reload IE& with the same results.

No, the upper right search box in IE7 in the Adress Bar.

"Reload" means what? Uninstall and reinstall? That would preserve
your AutoComplete data which may be what is causing this symptom.
RIES would be a better repair procedure than such a "reload" in this case.

Do you get an AutoComplete dropdown list when you start typing?
Alternatively what do you see if you press Ctrl-e,Delete,CursorDown?
Assuming there is a list of previously used searches (perhaps ones which
contain more than 2 characters <w>) what happens if you try to use one?

Re: Instant Search Crashes IE7 on 3rd Character

1. Does this behavior persist if you start IE7 in No Add-ons mode?

To start IE7 in No Add-ons mode:

Right-click on the blue IE desktop icon and select Start without Add-ons; or

Start > (All) Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Internet Explorer (No
add-ons).

2. Does the problem persist if you Reset IE7 Settings (RIES)?

3. If you uninstall (a) IE7 (which automatically returns you to IE6), (b)
all toolbars and (c) all third-party Windows Themes (including Window
Blinds) and don't reinstall IE7, does this behavior persist?

Re: Instant Search Crashes IE7 on 3rd Character

Robert,

Thanks for the reply.

I first did a simple reload of IE7 over the already installed version. After
your suggestions, I uninstalled and re-installed IE7. That didn't fix the
problem.

There was no autocomplete dropdown in either case and CTL-E, DEL, DWN
doesn't show anything.

I did solve the problem by going to Firefax on this machine which works fine.

Thanks,

Gerry

Re: Instant Search Crashes IE7 on 3rd Character

On further playing, CTL-E, DEL, DWN does display a dropdown list and
selecting one of those works fine. Only keyboad entry fails.

Re: Instant Search Crashes IE7 on 3rd Character

You may have a horked (dirty; bad; flawed) install of IE7. I suggest that
you..,

1. Uninstall IE7 (which automatically returns you to IE6) per
http://www.ie-vista.com/kbase2.html

2. Uninstall all toolbars and third-party Windows Themes (including Window
Blinds).

3. Reinstall IE7 per http://www.ie-vista.com/known_issues.html#pre-install,
and using http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/default.mspx as the
installation source, not Automatic/Windows Update.
