Red X problem on websites

Hi,
I checked the group for this problem but didn't find a thread for it, but if
it has been dealt with (and it probably has ..), then I'm sorry but I
haven't found it.

I'm running IE7/ Windows XP Home Edition/ all Microsoft updates in place.
My problem is I'm seeing Red x's on websites instead of images. I have Show
Pictures checked in IE7, and all Temporary Internet Files have been deleted
(I do this daily).
My Firewall has been checked and doesn't seem to be causing the problem.
Can someone help please?
Many thanks.
Anne

Re: Red X problem on websites

This has been discussed numerous times before, but perhaps not in this NG.
It can be caused by various things, most likely a pop-up blocker. Disable
your pop-up blocker and see if that works. Otherwise, one of the experts
here can give you some links.

Lets try to compare facts...

Has anything been changed recently?

The only thing I can think of that has affected my box is the recent java
updates from SUN.
I am running Java Standard Edition 6 v1.6

If you go to control panels and click on Java, hit the general tab, and then
'About" which will give you version info.

MVP Please Help

This is all ancient and irrelevant stuff..

I have the same issue, people know about it, but there is very little
resolution other than throwing down whatever KB articles are out there on
IE5-6 and some registry hacks that are pretty old..

Annie,

if you right click on the explorer icon and do "run as administrator" and
then go to your site, do the pictures appear?
If they do you are EXACTLY at the point I am at, which is a dead end..

People of alluded to the fact that the bug exists and we 'hope" microsoft
will take care of it, but there isn't even a kb article yet acknowledging
there is an issue. It was supposed to be fixed in 6 but evidently not.

MVP Please help.

Hi,
Go to IE> Tools> Manage add-ons and disable all browser add-ons. Close and
re-open IE. Try some websites. Any change?

Next, turn on the Windows Firewall from Control Panel> Windows Firewall and
disable your third-party firewall or security suite. The easy way to disable
the program(s) may be Start> Run> (type in) msconfig> Startup tab. Uncheck
entries related to these programs. Restart. Any change?

Are you running any security / antispyware programs which might be blocking
images in an attempt to block ads?

Hope this helps,

There's a lot more on that page, Annie.

Are you having any other browsing issues (e.g., being redirected to unwanted websites; search not working; pop-up messages saying that you're machines infected and to download such-and-such a removal tool)?

Is a "web accelerator" installed? What firewall are you using?

Re: Red X problem on websites

Hello again,
I have no other problems whatsoever, just the red x's. I have no web accelerator installed and I'm using Windows Firewall at the moment. Search is working as it should.
I've read the web page you directed me too since sending the error message.
I reinstalled Windows just over a week ago, from scratch, but the problem was with me before that too, and a sys restore isn't going to help me solve this. I haven't touched the Registry. I run Xoftspy 2ce a week as well as a couple of other spyware utilities. AVG runs daily - I don't have it scanning emails.

Hi,
Are you sure that all third-party security programs and the firewall were
disabled, as a test? Some of these are difficult to terminate.

How about posting your Running Tasks? Start> Run> (type in) msinfo32 Go to
Software Environment> Running Tasks. Click in the right pane then Crtl a
(select all) then Ctrl c (copy.) Paste the list into your reply.
