IE6 Hijacked by MSN! H*E*L*P

I've started using IE v6 on XP Home SP2. I cannot set my homepage.
Whenever I try, it reverts to MSN. I've gone into the registry and
tried to reset it to google. I get an error message that says the
value cannot be changed.

I've googled and been to Kelly's site and tried her fixes to set my
own homepage. No joy.

Can somebody help me get rid of MSN and have my own homepage please?

It might be a security program blocking the Registry change it needs to
make. A few, but not all, of the programs now doing this are:
Ad-aware's Ad-Watch
IBM Access Connections
McAfee VirusScan and/or Antispyware
Norton AV
Spyware Blaster
Spybot> Tools> IE Tweaks
Spybot- Teatimer
Spysweeper
Spyware Doctor
Windows Defender
Zone Alarm (free) 6.5 Reported to be fixed in later versions.

In the case of Zone Alarm 6.5 or Norton 2007 it actually has to be
uninstalled. Make sure the Windows Firewall is turned on until you
reinstall Zone Alarm.

Boot into Safe Mode with Networking and try the change.

Re: IE6 Hijacked by MSN! H*E*L*P

Hi,
These and other third-party programs can lock the IE homepage. Examine the
settings of security/privacy/antispyware programs for the option to lock
homepage, lock IE control panel, lock IE settings, etc.
Spybot (Advanced Mode) Tools> IE Tweaks
Spybot- Teatimer
Ad-aware Pro
Norton AV 2006 (Web Browsing > Spyware protection)
McAfee AV or Antispyware
Spyware Blaster
Spysweeper
Zone Alarm- free and pro.

If you don't wish to dig through settings of whichever security/privacy
programs you have installed, you *may* be able to startup in Safe Mode,
change
the homepage then restart the computer. That won't always work- an earlier
version of Zone Alarm free had to be uninstalled.

Hope this helps,
Don

RE: IE6 Hijacked by MSN! H*E*L*P

Try the following steps that I used for a similar problem that worked for
me, and follow Taylor's Law for editing the Windows Registry: "If in doubt,
don't do it!" But it's really quite simple.

1. Click on Start > type "regedit" > browse to...

My Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USESoftware\Microsoft\Intern et Explorer\Main

2. In the right pane, look for the obstinate MSN homepage address (it will
be named "First homepage"). In the "Data" column, no string with MSN should
appear so delete any items you see with "msn" in this pane.

NOTE: If you are nervous about editing registry keys, highlight the
unwanted item in the "Name" column > click on "File" in
upper menu > Export > and choose to save the command
as a *.reg file in, say, Desktop.

3. Right-click on the MSN item > select "Delete" then exit Windows' registry.
4. Reboot.

You should now be able go into Internet Options and select any homepage you
wish. Delete the backup of the string in Desktop (to restore the backup, you
would only need to double-click on the *.reg file).

You may also try Spybot. Right-click on the icon in the systray > Settings >
choose the appropriate tab > and click on the black "X" next to the msn URL>
follow the ensuing prompts.

Why not upgrade to IE7? If you have Google or some other tab listed, you can
right-click on the "Start Page" key > Modify > and manually change the
homepage in the Value Data field to, say, http://www.google.com/

I hope this helps,

Gman

Re: IE6 Hijacked by MSN! H*E*L*P

Hi Giman,
I have tried that, and I do find the culprit key. When I try
to change it, I get a message that I'm not allowed to edit it. :-(
