| Click to run Activex > error message : reprise I have'nt got any reply to this subject yet, so I try and see if posting this one in the Internet Explorer discussion group will make this issue more visible. Every time a (safe!) web site requires me to run an ActiveX control, clicking on the dialogue box causes IE 7 to crash. I get an error message from IE which tells me that "IE has encountered a problem and needs to close" Clicking on the details gives me: AppName: iexplore.exe AppVer: 7.0.6000.16473 ModName:mshtml.dll ModVer: 7.0.6000.16481 Offset: 00211dee I had a similar problem when using IE 6, which was solved by downloading the IE 7 version. Judging by the comments on this forum, I was not the only one experiencing these problemes with IE 6. However, I haven't seen a thread yet commenting on the same bug in IE 7. As of july 29, my latest updates were Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - July 2007 (KB890830) Update for Windows XP (KB936357) These were installed about 2 weeks ago. I ignore if these updates caused the problem, because I had not entered such websites for quite a time until recently. Could someone please suggest me a solution to this problem? I would be very grateful to him / her. -- JG |

Incompatible add-ons: What if you right click the IE icon on the desktop and choose Start Without Add-ons? Or go to Start | All Programs | Accessories | System Tools | Internet Explorer (No Add-ons). 2. Tools | Internet Options | Advanced Scroll to the bottom and click Reset Internet Explorer Settings. 3. The most likely cause of crashes is interference by incompatible third-party programs. To test this hypothesis try using the Manage Add-ons tool to disable *all* non-essential add-ons. E.g. sort by Publisher and allow only add-ons by Microsoft Corporation (or only ones which are essential.) > > I get an error message from IE which tells me that "IE has encountered a > problem and needs to close" > > Clicking on the details gives me: > > AppName: iexplore.exe AppVer: 7.0.6000.16473 ModName:mshtml.dll > ModVer: 7.0.6000.16481 Offset: 00211dee Unfortunately crashes in common modules are often due to their callers and this diagnostic gives you no information about that. Neither does the (mostly unformatted) information in the Details window. You can get information about the callers from the drwtsn32.log in the Stack Back Trace for the crashing thread (e.g. the one indicated by the FAULT -> tag.) The value of that information is increased when you let drwtsn32.exe find the appropriate symbols files, e.g. ideally ones which were generated by builds for the same versions of the modules you see listed there. Neverthess just getting a list of the modules involved in the crash is often an important clue. | Re: Click to run Activex > error message : reprise Thanks to your comments I found out that it was one of my installed add-ons that was causing those crashes, to be more specific: SiteAdv.dll, type: Browser Helper Object. This is an add-on belonging to MacAfee SiteAdvisor. By disabling it, the sites I mentioned earlier work perfectly. Thank you very much for your helpful response. -- JG "Frank Saunders, MS-MVP OE/WM" wrote: > "Jariso" <Jariso@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message > news:6DE5A726-E09F-421B-9F37-B656AC40010C@microsoft.com... > >I have'nt got any reply to this subject yet, so I try and see if posting > >this > > one in the Internet Explorer discussion group will make this issue more > > visible. > > > > Every time a (safe!) web site requires me to run an ActiveX control, > > clicking > > on the dialogue box causes IE 7 to crash. > > > > I get an error message from IE which tells me that "IE has encountered a > > problem and needs to close" > > > > Clicking on the details gives me: > > > > AppName: iexplore.exe AppVer: 7.0.6000.16473 ModName:mshtml.dll > > ModVer: 7.0.6000.16481 Offset: 00211dee > > > > I had a similar problem when using IE 6, which was solved by downloading > > the > > IE 7 version.
