| Removing branded ie7 I down loaded ie7 and a tool bar from comcast. I think I finally got rid of the toolbar but no matter what I change, delete or upgrade I sitll have "Windows internet explorer provided by Comcast". Is there any way to get rid of this short of reimaging my machine? |

| Re: Removing branded ie7 Here's the question: Do you want to remove any and all customizations that Comcast may have made to your browser - in other words, do you want a Microsoft default version of IE 7 - or do you just want to remove the "Windows Internet Explorer Provided by Comcast" masthead? If the former, read this information: [from http://www.tech-recipes.com/rx/1925/...move_branding] A branded version of Internet Explorer 7 refers to a redistributed IE that has been customized (usually by using the Internet Explorer Administration Kit). These customizations may alter the default feeds and search provider, have a customized browser title, etc. This branding cannot be removed simply by uninstalling it and installing a new version. If you are currently running a branded version of IE7, and want to run it using the Microsoft defaults, do the following . . . 1. Go to the Internet Explorer directory (in the Program Files folder) and check the CUSTOM directory. If the file install.ins exists, delete it. 2. Uninstall Internet Explorer 7. 3. Install a clean version of IE7. 4. Open the Internet Explorer browser. 5. Click on Tools and select Internet Options. 6. Select the Advanced tab. 7. Under the Reset Internet Explorer settings, click the Reset button. If the latter you need to edit your registry, which gets a little messy: [from http://pubs.logicalexpressions.com/P...le.asp?ID=671] To remove Comcast's company name from the title bar, make sure neither Internet Explorer nor Outlook Express are running, launch the registry editor and navigate to this key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main In the registry editor’s right pane, you should see an entry named WindowTitle. Double-click on this item and change the text to Microsoft Internet Explorer. If there is no WindowTitle entry, create a new string value entry, name it WindowTitle, and give it the text value Microsoft Internet Explorer. Next, find this key and repeat the above procedure: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main Fixing up Outlook Express is similar. First, you need to drill down to this key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities\{User_ID}\Software\Mi crosoft\Outlook Express\5.0 Here, {User_ID} is a long string of hex digits looking something like this: {91217320-2072-11DA-B83E-B6FA9E8B723C} If you have more than one Outlook Express identity, you’ll have multiple Outlook Express-related registry entries to modify, each with a different User_ID. Anyways, you again need to locate and modify the WindowTitle entry, just as you did for Internet Explorer. It gets even messier if you also want to change the 'throbber' - that's the graphic in the upper right corner of the browser frame. See instructions for this in the second URL I supplied. Be /extremely/ careful when editing the registry. --- Leonard Grey Errare humanum est jimadavis1 wrote: > I down loaded ie7 and a tool bar from comcast. | Re: Removing branded ie7 Thanks Leonard. I opted for the first solution - go back to OOTB. Your suggested solution seems to have worked.
