| Returning to MSIE, questions/problems Quite some time ago I switched from IE6 to Firefox. I upgraded IE to v7 when it was released anyway, and currently still have it. After some problems with Firefox 2.x, I switched to Opera. But now, due to too many site incompatibilities I'm switching back to IE, using v7. And I'm hitting some bumps along the way. Some minor annoyances, and some "WTF?" moments. Bookmark management: After migrating browsers a few times, my Favorites in IE are no longer correct/current. I was able to find out how to get my current set out of Opera and into IE, but now I've got duplicates. Not all of them are dupes, but a fair number due to reorganizing between my initial move away from IE and my move back. Is there a programmatic way to check for dupes and take care of them? The built-in bookmark management quite frankly sucks in IE. Toolbars: Is there any way to move the "Command bar" off of the tab bar space and onto its own line, or better yet, sharing the bar line with the menu bar? Windows Explorer allows for that, as did prior versions of IE. I'd rather use that space for more tabs. RSS: Any decent RSS readers for IE7? The built-in one is severely lacking in usability and what I've tried so far from the add-on site are either no better or are actually worse (IMO). For examples of what I'm looking for here, take a look at Sage or WIZZ for Firefox. It must be able to import an OPML list and allow me to get rid of its default set. FTP: If I'm going to remove Firefox, I'll need something to replace its FTP plugin, FireFTP. Site login/password management: Is it based on autocomplete only? Or is there any way I can get it to pre-fill login data when the page loads, or on command? Not all of my login-enabled sites have the same userid. This is on a personal home computer and is not shared, so I don't have to worry about other users "accidentally" using my profile. -- Jeffrey Kaplan www.gordol.org The from userid is killfiled Send personal mail to gordol I spilled Spot remover on my dog. | Re: Returning to MSIE, questions/problems Hi Jeffrey: "Is there a programmatic way to check for dupes and take care of them?" No, but there must be a zillion applications you can download from the internet that will do this for you. "The built-in bookmark management quite frankly sucks in IE." Particularly to a mad browser-hopper like you. There are a zillion and one bookmark managers available on the internet. Go ye forth and download. "Is there any way to move the "Command bar" off of the tab bar space and onto its own line, or better yet, sharing the bar line with the menu bar?" Not within IE 7 itself - not yet, at least. "Any decent RSS readers for IE7?" "If I'm going to remove Firefox, I'll need something to replace its FTP plugin, FireFTP." "Site login/password management: Is it based on autocomplete only?" You really have this 'thing' against searching on the internet, don't you? Too bad you can't find a browser that meets your exacting needs...but there is such a thing as a software industry. Sheesh, I'd hate to be your waiter in a restaurant. --- Leonard Grey Errare humanum est Jeffrey Kaplan wrote: > Quite some time ago I switched from IE6 to Firefox. | Re: Returning to MSIE, questions/problems Hi Jeffrey, Command Bar..... If you double click on the "|" gripper on the left of the Command bar it will shrink or grow to reveal your tab leafs. The same goes for your other addon toolbars and the menu bar. I place all of my toolbars on the one line to maximise the vertical screen real estate.(Beware the Google toolbar "Toolbar layout hijack"). A customizable toolbar layout (resize, reposition) is something the other browsers are now lacking. Regards. The URL format ftp://username:password@domain.com should work. If Network Places isn't on the desktop... Display Properties> Desktop> Customize> check it. Hope this helps, Don [MS MVP- IE] |

| Re: Returning to MSIE, questions/problems Hi Jeffrey, It takes a while to learn how to drive. Each model is slightly different. I am not on the FF hate club, but I am impressed by the way IE7 design features are better suited to the latest cpu/screen bundles from OEM's. FF is an impressive and intuitive browser, but I feel that the latest versions have not taken advantage of wide screen displays. Vertical screen space is wasted on rarely used, or redundant toolbars and extensions. Google toolbar layout hijack..... Upon restarting IE, the Google toolbar occupies a line of the IE toolbar, even after it has been moved to a users preference and the 'Lock the Toolbars' context menu selected. Basically the toolbar goes where it wants to go, not where the user puts it. Gripper toolbar toggeling - each to his own. Wide screens are increasing in use and gui design is changing to reflect the new aspect ratio of modern display devices. Toolbars take up screen height, while Side Bars and the Favorites center utilise unused screen width. Toolbar toggeling allows you to have more toolbars without taking up additional (and valued) vertical screen space. On the Command bar, double clicking the Command bar gripper "|" will shrink the Command bar and expand the tabs, so you can view the title of more tabs, double clicking on the Command bar gripper again will expand the Command bar and shrink the tabs, taking you back to the 'default' layout. There were plenty of complaints when IE7 was in beta, nobody liked the new interface features. The standard stock answer in this forum was.... Give it time...you'll get used to it I think that still applies, both to newbies and browser converts. Regards. Unfortunately, you cannot relocate the command bar to another line, but you can completely remove the command bar and use the menu bar instead. To switch the command bar off, I have developed a small command line utility (http://www.quero.at/launcher.php) Run the following command once: qlaunch.exe commandbar=no To move the fixed address bar, I have replicated the navigation bar functionality into a 3rd-party toolbar (www.quero.at) which can be moved and resized again.
