| Tabs Don't Show At Top Of Page I'm visiting my father and fixing the cumulative problems since my last visit. He's running Windows XP Home SP2 and I installed Internet Explorer 7 last night. This is ****ed peculiar: We have two users on this machine; him and me. If I log in, I see the "normal" IE7 just as it exists on my home machine, which runs XP Pro SP2... I have three tabs to my home page and all operates as I think it should. If my father logs in, as you look across from top left to right, you see "Favorites Center", then "Add To Faqvorites", then "Home". There are no tabs; there is no way I can see to open a new tab. Now, there is a downward pointing arrow just to the immediate right of the "home" button. Clicking on it shows the three selections my father wanted to be tabs for his home page. If you click on any one of them there is no delay in opening... so it's as if it were functionally opening a previously loaded tab rather than opening a new window. Visually, it's as if you opened another window. We share the same firewall (ZoneAlarm Pro), the same anti-virus (Norton's Systemworks 2003), the same anti-spy (Windows Defender). For the life of me, I don't see why it works properly for one user but not another. Ideas? Mortimer Schnerd, RN mschnerdatcaroplina.rr.com |

| Re: Tabs Don't Show At Top Of Page You may have a horked (dirty; bad; flawed) install of IE7. I suggest that you.., 1. Uninstall IE7 (which automatically returns you to IE6) per http://www.ie-vista.com/kbase2.html 2. Uninstall all toolbars and third-party Windows Themes (including Window Blinds). 3. Reinstall IE7 per http://www.ie-vista.com/known_issues.html#pre-install, and using http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/default.mspx as the installation source, not Automatic/Windows Update. (Etc.) >> >> >> Does that user have Enable Tabbed Browsing checked? >> (Options, Advanced tab, Tabbed Browsing section) > > > Enable Tabbed Browsing IS checked for both users. > > >> If not, perhaps that is how multiple home pages are handled then? Have you tried toggling it? E.g. on your account so you can test if it is the same symptom? Then toggle it twice on your father's account. Do it using inetcpl.cpl with iexplore.exe not active. > > > When I downloaded and installed IE7 last night, I set up my father's screen > before I did my own. His never showed any tabs. Then I logged in under my name > and tabs were created as I would expect them considering my previous experience > with my home machine. It may help if you listed whatever else you are both using as add-ons and accessories. This symptom sounds slightly familiar but I can't remember any details. One thing I know though is that there are programs which interfere in various ways which can not be controlled by No Add-ons mode. One of the accessories from Google is an example. So you might have to resort to some clean-boot troubleshooting techniques to find a culprit. Another alternative would be running ProcMon in both accounts and comparing the differences in the traces. E.g. the Process event trace might even be enough to show you differences as modules are loaded, stacks built up, etc. Good luck Robert --- |

I then installed the software and rebooted twice again, reactivated auto update, then installed the updates Windows found. I rebooted again, then tried IE7. | Re: Tabs Don't Show At Top Of Page Here's how this one finally played out. I decided, just for G&S, to create a totally new username. What do ya know? The new username showed the tabs just as they should have from the start! Not only that, the old username had an issue where it wouldn't apply the same settings to all files no matter what I did... including some registry work where I changed a value to a much higher number of pages. But I digress. Obviously the original username had some issues. All subsequent usernames didn't. So I copied, imported, etc. everything I could think of to the new username, I've still got to port over the old message rules but I think I've got most of it done now. I'm going to make the old username invisible for now so I can still get to it if I forgot something. Anyway, that's my story and I'm sticking to it. Thanks for everybody's help.
